  • Hard News: It's not OK to just make…,

I very much like the’ it’s not ok’ ad’s ……. Their message is a simple undeniable truth and its delivered in seven words …………………… It’s a very very good campaign.

As Russell and others have noted the increase in the reporting of domestic violence suggests a change in our attitude with less tolerating or ‘putting up with it ‘ now going on.

Unfortunately the good results like society being less tolerant of assaults within the home and reporting more of them to the police got twisted and used for political ends by the national party in the recent election .

They used the increase in violent crime stats brought about by more domestic assaults being reported for cynical electioneering. They ‘used’ the stats to whip up fear about ‘violent crime ‘, which of course JK and the natianals were going to stamp out unlike the soft on crime namby pamby PC wowsers which they and the likes of bill rolston keep telling us the Labor party are.

Take something good ……………….. spin it around ………………… and reproduce it as cynical fear mongering.

The cost ????????? How about another 1000 police peeps?????

As for why Ralston should have such strange/bad attitude towards domestic violence and woman in general ……………………….. perhaps his ‘condition’ and the effects it could have had on his relationship with the other sex, especially when he was a teenager , has infused him with anger that even now bubbles up to the surface on occasion.

  • Hard News: Conversation Starters,

I've been reading this thread over days ( a little at a time ) and its far better with all its links and opinions than a boring one sided newspaper ...................... stuff the dom I say .

Booze .............. I'm largely with ben and most of the flavors associated with drinking are there to hide the manky chemical taste/sensation of the alcohol.

Beer is tolerable until you start on the strong ones like elephant beer and then it tastes like crap ( alcohol )

But I do find it ironic that people should be talking about mature adult attitudes to drinking when even some posters here have a childish approach general issue of drugs .................... and lets face it alcohol is a strong drug.

I dont think its been said in this thread yet but there is a sizeable minority of people who should NEVER touch that particular drug.

Wine and all other forms of booze should have a prominent label stating that it contains XX mls of the drug ethanol.

People should accept the fact ( without any shame ) that they are drug taking when they are drinking.

................... even if they only have one pint/ glass / nip they are getting an effect.

The natianals have stated that they are going to crack down on cannabis ........................ again.

So dont worry about the booze to much because there will be a side show/ distraction to take our minds of it all ................. the 'bad" druggies will be copping it so the good wine drinking folk dont have to worry.

Israel : Its a bloody disgrace even if no one is blameless.

I would like to see an artist start a 'work in progress'.

This work would be a large swastika but it would be drawn/composed or made up of lots of little black stars of david ...................... one for each of the woman and children they have killed.

It is the road they are going down .

Broadcasters who make you go eeeewwwwwwwwww

    Perigo ………….. cultist
    Laws …………… apologist
Miles Davis …….. he’s on talk sport and thinks the English rugby team just got up to “a bit of fun “ with their recent rape/sex accusations…………… Sexist + pro violence
    Veitch………………. Woman beater

………………. And seeing as lots of people are offering up possible scenario’s of how Veitch broke his partners back may I be the first one to speculate ……………………… that he was trying to help her by kicking her into the recovery position.

It took four kicks to get her there.

................... the affirmation seems to be that the bigger picture may containmany little details, none of which excuse jake the veitch.

The little bit of the bigger picture that tigger helps fill in is that some people are always grasping at little details to excuse the inexcusable.

Its not the bigger picture ................. its muddying the waters

......... that man veitch obviously is a mean nasty piece of work.

Nice people dont break bones on other people in anger.

Or do we believe his image as opposed to the reality of what he did and what sort of person does that?

............... A quick bit of reflection has me amending the dompost story to include females ( they just stated males ) amongst those requiring facial repairing surgery as the result of alcohol fueled assaults.

Because obviously males dont just dish it out to other males

  • Hard News: So far from trivial,

    What a Whooper of a thread ………………

I don’t think some of the various debates here at PA over the pages have shown posters attitudes towards gender and power in relationships ………….I’d say its been more revealing about our attitudes towards violence.

One poster expressed the opinion that violence administered in a mafia beating is worse than the same violence from a persons family/partner ………………… I find the violence from the partner worse ………….. home and family should be the safest sanctuary of all. …… whereas thinking family violence is somehow more benign seems to be going along the “just a domestic” path………………

I believe a lot of the violence that ends up on our streets is the overflow from what people have learned and experienced in their homes.

I also feel we have glossed over the role alcohol plays in brutal behavior all around the country. I think it was Russell who posted that alcohol is no excuse and he’s right to a point and I presume as a drinker that he ( like me ) does not turn into a “nasty drunk” or get into confrontations.

However some people DO seem to suffer from some type of alcohol psychosis and I have seen the enraged maddened reptile eyes of a person who is lost in a alcohol haze of hate.

It’s a very powerful drug and some people should never touch the stuff ……….

In yesterdays Dompost there was a story in which it was reported that half of all facial surgery repairing trauma in NZ was the result of young males beating each other while drinking. It is costing the health service hundreds of millions of dollars in health care each year.

    Booze culture = violence culture

And although I think veitch was “tired and emotional “ when he dished out his beating his behavior afterwards has been no different than any other criminal trying to get away with their crime.

There was a little discussion earlier in this thread about language and how it is or can be used against woman or in a sexist way, as a “ dirty druggie “ I fully get the point .

I’d add our country’s language and phrasing towards violence is always glossed over and euphemized.

Example: knocked a person unconscious ………………….a knock sounds like an accident, punched or kicked someone unconscious is what really happens when someone is “knocked unconscious”.

Veitch has so far succesfully avoided a charge of and a short jail lag for the crime of GBH.

Never mind about his career and public image ................... its very hard to do television work from inside your small jail cell.

So far Veitch has paid the coin and stayed out of the dock.

If he avoids a conviction and jail sentance then his blood money has worked well.

The prick should have been locked up ............... no if's, but's or maybe's .................... you break bones on another person through anger and violence then you NEED a spell in jail to think about yourself ....................
