  • Hard News: Little pieces of a big picture,

@Sofie a particularly interesting choice of photo considering the great number I've seen of kids playing in the cracks and holes - it was very evocative of an impoverished child squatting at the site of a third world disaster. only difference i guess was that she was happily grinning from memory... twas on the cover of the SST as well, hence my earlier comment...

Hmm interesting that you though the SST did it right Russell, the opinions round the lunch table down here was it was a bit 'third world disaster' images, kinda like the picture of the chap walking past some ruined shops wearing a facemask. I was onto RNZ online within minutes of the quake, but for a long time the live stream just seemed to be playing some recording of Jim Mora, maybe i'm doing it wrong?

  • Busytown: The shakes,

The shake woke us here in Dunedin with a vigorous side to side shaking, then a minute later my sister (in Chch) phoned my cell VERY freaked out, checking whether we had felt that/were ok...

Frankly a miracle of somesort that it didn't happen during the day, otherwise worse injuries/fatalities would be a certainty. Think the taxi driver is ok, the serious injuries were a guy hit by a falling chimney and another hit by glass...

  • Up Front: Something Chronic,

@Lilith - i'm pretty sure that there's a fair bit of research being done here at Otago on Co-enzyme Q10 as i recall attending a lecture on it a few years ago ... in fact, i've just popped onto the Otago website and Professor Robin Smith of the Chemistry department is who gave the lecture.

The only solace I find in this budget is that they are going back on last year's budget announcement on cutting $45 million from the teacher staffing budget. This will no longer happen.

    Where did they announce this?

Personally i'm a bit worried. After 6 years of working towards a qualification (combined with beginning a family), next year is pegged for the final push (full time study for 18 months). I'll not have the time to do any paid work while doing the course. We'll be paying for 52 hrs a week ECE for our 2 1/2 yr old, (which I imagine will increase in cost as the centre we're applying to has a high ratio of qualified staff), minus whatever childcare subsidy we'll qualify for then. Despite the 'tax cuts', the increase in GST means I'm not overly confident as to how well we'll get by.

Interestingly, when using the tax calculator linked to earlier, the difference in 'weekly income' clawed back for my partner and myself from the tax cut between this year while I'm earning ~$13K and next year when i'll be earning $0 is ~$1.50 a week. Why is this?

  • Random Play: Tragedy in our playground,

My cousin's brother in law has lost 5 members of his adopted family, she has said to donate to The Red Cross, for the same reason as above.

Please donate, some people have lost more than everything...

  • Hard News: Footnotes,

But my point is that you can excuse a person for letting their attention lapse momentarily. It was a three month trial. Who has the concentration and stamina to be always attentive?

Oh come on! The guy was asleep!
