In the UK the first 12 months of employment lacks the protection of unfair dismissal rights, so it is relatively easy to dismiss an employee in that period. This is of course subject to discrimination law (Equality Act just passed before the election, to consolidate such) and pay claims.
The three month probation rule is simply one of custom and practice, which is usually followed up by the contract or letter of offer. By virtue of the contract is is also quite possible to opt out of disciplinary and grievance procedures in that first 12 months.
It is reasonably common to dismiss an employee without reason at about month 10 or 11 on the basis of the above. The long and the short of it is that if an employee wants to take action in that first 12 months they must find a pay or discrimination claim or breach of contract.

On a slightly related note, TfL in London is trialling a bike hire scheme similar to the Paris scheme. Starts at the end of the month and looks to be in Zone 1 for now

Speaking of reunions tours, I did see the 3Ds in Brixton's Windmill pub a month or two back. Now that was a cool blast from the past

Very interesting read, as per usual.

So I am right in saying we retired from the World Cup as the only undefeated team?
This is important for boasting reasons at work tomorrow

On that note, Islander, do you know of any books on Orkney or Shetland immigration to NZ? It seems like North Otago and Otago more generally was quite a popular destination for immigration from those islands.

The turned up collars on shirts was pretty common in North Otago as late as the mid 1990s

Great story. For a moment I was transported from the muggy Edwardian streets of London to the muggy Canterbury plains

I was talking to a couple of Australians over here about it and they also seemed pretty happy that we'd done so well. The consensus being that they hadn't played so well and that they wanted an alternative to England to support.
I would only hope that we will be so relaxed about a similar situation in the future, if the results (or perception of a good result) were reversed

It certainly was rather a good day. I was in a pub on Old Brompton Road, which had a mixed crowd of Kiwis and Italians, so you could imagine the noise.
