  • Hard News: The A-Word,

what i think is interesting about the coverage is the desperate need to immediately pathologize Cho.

on the one hand, yes of course his behaviour was completely patholgical, outrageous and unforgivable. but the message i got from his 'press kit' was about one profoundly alienated kid living in a world he couldn't relate to and had clearly come to despise. particularly pertinent i thought her his attacks on the narcisstic materialism of his piers.

how many other kids in similar societies might feel the same way, irrespective of other underlying pathologies? that would be the really scarey question to ask, but then that might raise all sorts of thorny questions about the extent to which secular materialism leads to alienation and disengagement, and how maybe valuing the latest bling/car/status symbol isn't really enough to keep everyone wanting to play nice.

i could never condone Cho's actions but the need to pathologize him rather than question whether he is partly a product of his world is interesting.

  • Yellow Peril: the identity game,

hear hear. Big ups to all of them - the interviewees and interviewer came across really well.

i've always found MI hard to handle but she really did come across well. i think she's mellowed a bit, although i acknowledge she has fair grounds for the things she was always so bitter about. the difference is by changing her tone more people are willing to listen.

there are no doubt more heroes like Chew Chong that we've never known about. i see in wiki that "In 1877, [Big Dick] was elected as the first Mayor of Kumara". so many reasons to suck...

  • Stories: Life in Books,

yeah Jung on archetypes is really interesting, and i think his identification and characterization of archetypes has informed a lot of great artists (not least of which our own miraculous Len Lye), designers and propagandists.
i think Jung's broader ontology is bit bit too complex to pass judgement on in under 10,000 words though. at the very least he's light years' ahead of Freud.

  • Yellow Peril: the identity game,

great performance by TMM last night on Here to Stay i thought, and one of the better episodes overall. even Mangying Ip was good.
it's amazing really that kiwis with with chinese ancestry have remained so loyal to this country after the amount of crap they've been dished out.

  • Hard News: The Civility Code,

    verily, far reaching consequences indeed.
have you ever wondered how much the pejoration of female deities stems from males' fear of feminine sexuality with specific regard to their ability to 'lure', mermaid-like, even the most powerful men to behaving apparently irrationally?
