  • Speaker: My First Job,

    I have a complaint.

If you are going to write lewd suggestive and sexual posts you damn well should make that clear in the title!

    Otherwise I might miss it.

A lovely post and I really think your husband should be rewarded for his part in bringing this to us :).

  • Up Front: Lessons from Nature,

Seems pretty sad that the only way you can get rid of a shit mayor/manager/xxx is to hope they get promoted somewhere far away.

But it's got super-shock-absorbers. So it will lie intact under the sand and the sea.)

    I heard it floats.

Yeah that's the way I understood it was meant to work. Essentially the building is on a large slab that should float on the "liquified" subsoil. With the dampers the building shouldn't move too much and shouldn't settle much either.

Same should work for homes built on soils with potential for liquifaction. Standard piles will just sink instantly but houses built on slabs should float.

  • Hard News: Little pieces of a big picture,

Civil defence procedures are intended to work without ministers.

Man I hope so. Because face it folks, our MPs and ministers are not all the sharpest knives and I really really don't want to be relying on them in an emergency.

By contrast, the civil defense teams are generally a collection of very knowledgeable experienced and smart folks who practice very hard to cope with chaos.

As for the PM flying in 12 hours late er planes need long flat pieces of land that haven't been undermined or disturbed by things like earthquakes. Making sure the runways were safe to land a plane on took time.

Yes he possibly could have got there faster but since his role is to "look concerned" it seems pointless to rush.

And yes the NZHerald really has struck a sour note through the whole thing.

  • Hard News: The Southern Apps,

Sadly I saw the title of the post and thought Russell had found some cool app designers or designers of cool apps on the other island.

Still haven't found the perfect iPad game

  • Hard News: The Southern Apps,

Believe me, the fact that I can't hack the micro-controller on my microwave to do other than it's lockdowned task really gets on my nerves.

I SO want to hack our microwave. The uh person who designed it thought it would be a great feature to have the microwave beep when it finishes cooking, fine, then they had the idea that a reminder beep a minute later would be good ... ok I accept that. But then they thought well we should just leave the microwave beeping once a minute forever until the user opens the door - at this point yes I do want to hack my microwave.

Either that or I want 5 minutes alone in a dark alley with the designer of that feature ...

The perfect plot for the 48 hr film thing those brilliant/mad folks do.

I have to wonder about how long the incubation period is, personally I suspect it's close to 9 years (or three terms).

  • Hard News: Doing Science in Court,

The AGWers want to make massive and incredibly costly changes to the world’s economy based on this apparent shit? And the skeptics are the ones who are crazy?

Prove it! Prove that the changes will be costly and expensive. Until you can supply incontrovertible proof of the economic damage then your argument is simply you don't want to change what you are doing.

BTW I'm deadly serious. There is a huge amount of bullshit being spouted by folks like you about about the economic harm supposedly caused by carbon taxes etc. And the economic models are much much worse than any climate models. Everything I've seen thus far has strongly indicated that while some industries will suffer the economic health of the planet will be unaffected, certainly over the time scale of decades which is the only relevant timescale. In other words, people making money from burning carbon won't make that money but other people will make money.

Meanwhile the planet is getting warmer and anyone with any real substantial knowledge in the field agrees with that conclusion. And if you continue your crusade to allow industries to burn carbon the planet will continue to get warmer.

The consequences of that are not some piddly little economic disaster. The consequence is death on a scale you can't even imagine properly. But don't let that concern you, go on and support those industries who burn carbon go on and attack dedicated honest scientists. Just stop pretending to yourself that you are doing any of this for the good of the planet and the people on it.

Sorry folks not much sleep last night and this non-science shit pisses me off.
