Hard News: Democracy Night, in reply to
Finally, isn’t it simply bizarre that I’m here defending the evil Matthew Hooten when he made a string of factual statements that should have the left jizzing in their pants.
I listened to that segment this morning also... Hooton almost sounded reasonable (except for his gratuitous snark against Robertson)

It’s a function of how the special votes are recorded. There aren’t any wholly Maori Polling Places. Each Polling Place will also have at least one General electorate.
Rachel, a belated thanks for this information, much appreciated.
Also, thanks to all the other clearly well informed and interesting comments on this thread. As ever, PA is the place to come for insight!

Tom, that seems a little harsh in tone but I agree your conclusion. However, Labour's policies would have directly and immediately improved struggle street, they just didn't connect. Incidentally, I'm very sorry Kelvin Davis is not returning to parliament, he has the qualities to reinvigorate the membership.

From a quick and partial look, there's no specials in the Maori seats, that seems odd to me. Perhaps they're just not counted?
I understand your formula, however two or three Auckland seats must surely be too close to call.

Hey Jacki, I share your views re Phil. He’s made mistakes but he’s led the party in really difficult circumstances. If there was a better leader over the last three years, they’d have rolled him. I also get the sense that his actions in the next few days will also be about helping the party make sense of last night and reorganizing accordingly.
Geoff, I saw only a little of Orgard but she comes across as a real talent, I hope she does stick around.

Russell, I know what your saying about the union influence but I don't agree with you. The balance between progressive and union interests is a constant tension but it's essential to the party's character. I do think that some of the candidate selection has been questionable though. Incidentally, in Rimutaka, Chris Hipkins beat the union backed candidate to succeed Paul Swain in '08 and now has a healthy majority.

NZF caucus must surely be one of the weakest ever in Parliament... Although there was the Clive Mathewson led (?) whatevertheywerecalled mob that had Pauline Gardiner...

Fun from a distance, yeah I know what you mean, kinda. How many more kiwis will be at "a distance"? I've mixed feelings, there's some things Labour did I'm genuinely proud of and I'm happy for the Greens too (Jan Logie is a person of remarkable talent). But Banks and Winston, what a couple of passed-it hacks!

All I can say to all those who have come early to Capture, please stay late.
Oh thank you so much, I remember this very fondly from school dances.
