  • Envirologue: The Agony of Vanuatu and…, in reply to Bart Janssen,

But the value of the farm is based on the amount of milk produced not the profit, so they make more milk and lose more money in order to be able to sell their farm for a higher profit.

Yes, I've seen it fairly convincingly demonstrated that the real money in dairy farming is in capital gains.

but writers, producers, directors, actors, designers, technicians etc etc etc – as a whole – simply arent even in the picture. Then theres the added issue of the downwards spiral of whats on screen, and how that in turn feeds back into the industry

To be fair, X Factor is keeping a bunch of production people in employment, even if it’s not their favourite thing. And scripted TV drama has performed horribly for TV3 in the past couple of years.

But NZ On Air said this week it won’t be part-funding the big talent show formats any more. I’d link to the Drinnan story but he has his numbers all confused and it'd be like spreading misinformation.

    Short version:

    X Factor NZ series 1 (2013) = $1.6m

    X Factor NZ series 2 (2015) = $800,000

    X factor NZ series 3 = $0

cor, feeling quite amped from reading through those, rock and roll.

I’m glad you can read them! I am mildly obsessive about carriage returns in online copy, and our caption style doesn’t support carriage returns, bolding or anything. I could have asked the guys to do the work and add it, but I ran out of time because last week was … consuming.

But I would like to say here and now that Ian’s paragraphing was beautiful.

Moon and Kills made the mistake of taking “highbrow” reality TV, with its feel-good pretence that it really about unearthing talent, and taking the show down to the level of the “real trash”. They were told to be cruel, but only in the “being cruel to be kind” kind of way and “this is hurting me more than it is hurting you” way that Simon Cowell has got down pat.

    Nicely summed up.

    the Great British Bakeoff.

It's hard to over-emphasise how big that show has been. It was literally the most popular show on BBC Two before it was shifted to BBC One.

Additional thing in its favour: the Daily Mail complained about the hosts' "smutty" innuendos.

By comparison, New Zealand's Hottest Home Baker was apparently a fairly miserable experience for those involved. Lunches frequently consisted of service station sandwiches and there was talk that one or two contestants tried to get themselves eliminated to end the pain.

Grand Designs is made by Kevin McLeod, as proven by the dullness of the Australian version

The Aussie version is so terrible.
