it was also news because it was it was the very last fucking headline Goff and his party needed this week.
Really? Because this week I saw no in depth analysis of the Labour party list, no commentary on the balance and worth of the people. Oh and I saw the death of the story about what's-his-name and the naked guy. Instead I saw a story about a loud mouthed lout from the west coast trying to suck up and get votes and he probably will.
I think we all got played. If you wanted to distract AND get votes for Damien O'Conner then you couldn't have done that better.

Ideas are seldom unique.
That's one of the hardest things to teach young scientists. They get this idea and are all like "I'm so amazing nobody else could have thought of this" and then you show them the five other groups working on the same idea - sometimes they learn.
But the flip side to that is you want young scientists to play with new (to them) ideas, because they can bring a new emphasis or perspective that changes the way we think.
And the same is true in these discussions, you say you were saying the same thing as someone else but you weren't, they were two different voices with different tones and emphasis and hearing both makes us all richer.

I think one problem with the Tinks/Trolls labels is that I think everyone has a little of both in them. I think we've seen in this community most of the posters have a "hot button" that will shift them from useful contributor to raving troll in a keystroke. We've also seen people displaying their true beliefs sometimes to the level of Tink.
I know I can (and do) troll sometimes, I know I sometimes (frequently) derail into my favourite (Tink?) topics. But I also contribute usefully sometimes. I think that's the real demarcation between trolls and the rest of a community, the trolls really don't contribute.
I wouldn't call Damien O'Conner a troll because I really don't see political grandstanding as trolling. It isn't about seeking attention, it's simply a cynical planned and staged statement designed to win votes from a gullible public, much like any other politician really - see now that's an obvious troll.

hmmm and without commerce commission interference they can charge ridiculous prices which will inflate profits - that will of course attract investors.

No really this is a serious question. If it is necessary can anyone explain why?
Is the proposal for some reason already known to breach consumer protections in such a way that the commerce commission would immediately act?

I can't see how a "regulatory holiday" ie declawing the commerce commission says anything other than the Telcos are planning to rip everyone off and they want to make sure the consumer watchdogs are kept at bay.
Fibre will be expensive to install the govt contribution is large but only a fraction of the cost so it's reasonable to allow companies to recoup the investment cost by charging. I have no problem with that so long as they don't rip everyone off. That's exactly what the commerce commission exists to prevent.
What do the Telcos expect from us - that we should trust them - snort.
