I've always had mixed feelings about Bradbury's approach. I often agree, up to a point, with his views, but he seems to go out of his way to be hyperbolic and antagonistic. If he'd be more moderate and less hectoring he could be a force to be reckoned with.
If he'd worded his speech on The Panel a little differently and delivered it with more charm, this whole furore need never have happened. And did anyone but Bradbury talk about this fictional "lifetime ban"? Did he honestly believe it? Or was it just an exaggeration for effect?

I understand that many people who commit violent crimes come from a history of deprivation and abuse. But it sounds like you're suggesting society should just let them do whatever they do with no consequences. Is that what you're suggesting, DCB?
I think our justice system and social services are imperfect, but I'd like to hear what concrete alternatives you're proposing.

You want vigilante justice instead?? Lynchings? Throwing known violent criminals to the public could be a lot worse for them than prison. Just sayin.
ETA: I think there are a lot of people in prison who could be better rehabilitated out of it. But that's not an argument for anarchy, just for non-custodial sentences in more cases.

Last night I did a file-rescue operation on a failing external drive. I simply could not have done that with XP. Not without losing my mind!

I know a lot of Apple devotees, and I’ve often felt slightly uncomfortable with the levels of devotion they show.
Last time I replaced my computer I opted to get another PC for reasons of value-for-money, and it’s a good machine. Windows 7 is a brainy and responsive OS, light years ahead of XP. It’s good to use, it does what I need it to.
But I get a thrill every time I use my iPod touch.
User-centred design is exciting and pleasant to use. And for those of us who use our computers a lot, there is a real difference between a workhorse which just does the job, and one that seems to know what we want and magically provide it. I totally get the sense of personal attachment people have to their Apple gadgets.
And I also get why so many people are taking Jobs’ death so personally. He’s changed the daily lives of so many people in a positive way. And without Apple raising the bar for usability I doubt Windows would have been forced to get its act together. So we can all be grateful for that.
(Such an irony that, as Russell said, Apple mice are so rubbish! :-)
But all-in-all, quite a legacy. We all should be so lucky.
Jobs obviously was a wealthy industrialist and I know that pisses some people off, they want other sorts of people for their heroes, and fair enough. But surely there’s room for more than one kind of hero?*
*and not all of them have to play sports, either. ;-)

There's a control and an alt key on both sides of the keyboard. It can be done one-handed, although it feels awkward. :-)
