I agree with you Ben that any number is arbitrary. Of course it is – I don’t buy into magic number theory. But I think Representative Democracy does need to be given a space where representatives can actually be allowed to represent, rather than looking constantly to the polls and voters to see if what they are doing is ‘popular’.
That's the one valid argument for a longer term as far as I can see.

What beach is that Nora? The cliffs remind me a bit of Torbay, but I presume it's further south than that.

Apart from those close to him, obviously. He didn’t hold public office, he didn’t work for a cause.
Not officially, but he advanced New Zealand's understanding of AIDS substantially, and was involved with Paralympics.

I don’t understand why this sort of bullying from this family is tolerated, and I do find it alienating.
It is bizarre isn't it. Can't 'they' all get together and tell her to bugger off and let someone else take the spotlight?

I suspect part of the appeal for some members of the voting public (and particularly non-voting public) for longer terms is wanting to have politicians in your face less often asking for your vote, rather than any strong feeling that it will make things better.

Just noticed that alt-j are playing Laneways - got their album an awesome wave off itunes at Xmas time and it's kept on growing on me over the past month - really good.
Officially jealous now :(

I fast forward through ads when I watch recorded TV, and I mute the TV otherwise.
And I don't go out of my way to read billboards, and I flick past the pages in newspapers that are just advertising.
But I don't expect these things not to be there and yet the articles to be magically written by pixies.

Because I pay for a good broadband connection I expect to be able to fashion my web experience exactly as I want it, not as anyone says I should see it – and that includes ads, within reason. For example, I use pop-up blockers but not ad blockers, but recently the SMH started running ads which consisted of annoying embedded video so now I ad block those. I will sit through 15 second ads on Youtube because I like to give the artists something, but I wouldn’t bother with 30 seconds. The principle is, again, that I am the one who pays the service provider, so I have a reasonable expectation to control my experience. So while I may chose to view ads, to my mind it is entirely my perogative to do so, and it cannot be an expectation to be set by the site owner, ever.
If you subscribe to an old-fashioned printed magazine, you pay two amounts for it. Amount one for the actual magazine – writers, printing etc, and amount two for it to be posted to you. Just because you pay for the magazine to be posted to you, doesn’t mean you expect it to arrive without the adverts that help pay for it.
Your internet service provider is taking care of the second, but not the first – you’re not paying anything for content. If the adverts aren’t paying for content, then no one is.
Which is all fine for you, however somewhere in this new world we need to provide money to people who provide quality content.
