  • Envirologue: Multi-no-choice –…, in reply to linger,

…. Missing the point that not responding is likely to cost us more (even in the short term).

I didn't miss the point. I just find that many people have no idea of the step change we have to make in order to actually make a difference in the long term. We have a massively indebted economy based on agriculture and extractive industries with a bit of tourism thrown in for bad measure.
Changing NZ to a low carbon economy must happen and happen quickly. Fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy night.

The same old thinly-veiled “this is going to cost ya” threats

Sadly, until everyone reading this post accepts that responding to climate change IS going to 'cost us', we are pretty much cooked.

  • Envirologue: The Cry of the Indignados –…, in reply to Dave Hansford,

where they know only too well what it's like to be invaded, to be oppressed, to be violated.

I think you'll find that they did quite a lot of that themselves. You just have to delve further back in history.

insular, parochial, but what we mistake for arrogance is just them declaring "never again." That's why they set fire to cars.

Which "never again"? - Monarchy? Revolution? WW1? WW2?

You really should mention the rural peasant population of France if you want people to understand their 'aux armes' attitude. 'Water our soil with the blood of our enemies' has a lovely ring to it

More importantly, they know what they WILL NOT stand for.

    Algerians? Moroccans? Romanians?

The rise of the far right is far more pronounced in Europe than any failed movement such as Occupy. The dismantling of the capitalist status quo may not be as smooth a process as you wish for... There are many lessons to be learned from European history.

It’s only a year after getting the latest most powerful gadget ever invented that we’re lamenting how it’s not fast enough to do what we want.

Even when it's perfectly capable... The power of marketing is immensely powerful. That's one thing to address in the long term.

The solution must be piecemeal - The problem is multifactorial.

Such a solution however, can only work with some massive, overarching, long term plan.

... and now that every neocon has spluttered into their coffee, removed their invisible hand from their sore genitals and started to furiously type a response, I will take my leave and tend my garden...

    or the enemy identified

    The enemy is us.

Until we recognise that simple fact nothing will change

And that’s worked a treat for the last 30 years, hasn’t it?

Well, I sort of implied that in my question to Bart...

Was the Clark government equally responsible for this neoliberal road we are travelling down? Will Andrew Little be any better? Will the unions be amenable to the massive changes we have to make?

I hope that you will be using your third post to lay out the 'revolution' you think is necessary to change the course we are currently on.

I initially read that as ‘well Fisted’

Well Lindzen does talk out of his arse so there’s no reason to be unduly concerned…

    “Asian”

Mmm. Maybe you should nuance that generalisation. People may take it the "Wrong way".
