  • Hard News: The newest neocon catastrophe,

Oh Jesus... do you think this is really the time to be getting too snidely bitchy about sport-based jingoism? You know -- the country where it's time for a mass wrist-slitting when the All Black LOSE A FUCKING FOOTBALL MATCH?

    Touché

  • Hard News: The newest neocon catastrophe,

What astounds me, 17 years after the wall came down was how quickly the much touted single hyper-power era came to a close.

Yeah... Its a totally different layout from a few years ago.
Russia, China, the US and the EU. Four quickly equalising pillars with different philosophies and politics.
A situation caused largely by America's foreign policy decisions.

The bear has definately escaped the cage. The question now is how hungry it is.

  • Hard News: The newest neocon catastrophe,

Meanwhile, the Dom Post online's top story is... a man pissing on a parking meter.

And not even a single mention of Georgia on the stuff.co.nz home page this morning... Wow.

  • Hard News: The newest neocon catastrophe,

There is very little positive that can be said about McCain IMHO.
I see that a staffer has said they would like to see him take less phone calls as they are "Concerned About His Tendency to Adopt the Last Opinion He Has Heard"...
This is scary stuff and sounds like a Bush/Cheney relationship writ large, with anyone and everyone in the puppetmaster role.

The Georgian conflict was an obvious mistake from very early on and Russia is definately going to regard it as a symbolic win, emboldening them further and reducing the US's influence in the region.

Its almost as if whomever nudged Georgia into action in South Ossetia was actually attempting to strengthen Russia's local and global reputation and resolve, as any other outcome was rather unlikely. Not that I subscribe to such conspiracy concoction.

  • Hard News: Heard any good tunes lately?,

The link to Mukuna mobile is broken... Cant seem to find a link on their site. Bummer.
I have never been taken by anything from Op Shop either...
The Madlib remix of the Madvillainy album is my favourite of the last month or so. Very strange but carefully constructed comic book hip hop with the lyrically bizarre and talented MF DOOM on the mic.
Its available for $9.99US in 360 kbps MP3 on the new stonesthrow site.
The site itself is great and they are adding more and more of the catalogue so check it out. The way the majors should be doing it...

  • Hard News: User-generated Speechification,

You need only look at the distribution of user generated vs commercial content on sites like Digg and Reddit to see that they are equally as important for a broad informational outlook. They compliment each other and have their own strengths whether it be blogs vs main stream media sites or ugc vs commercial clips.
For one to be labelled a 'footsoldier' of the other is a naive way to look at the situation as a large portion of paid content takes it's lead from the user gen world.
This relationship is simbiotic as the blogosphere (forgive me) learned it's way of being from the commercial media.
In many respects the line is blurred as a blogger can make a living from their work, and is thus 'paid' so a clear definition can be tricky.
There will always be a place for both however the strength of the user created world should not be underestimated... As is shown by the msm's embrace of many 'user gen' features to add value to their own propositions, for better or worse. (I would have been happier not learning about the current state of the heralds readership from the your views section for instance)
