  • Hard News: How many children with cancer…,

    I worked for HNZC close on nine years. We went on these under Labour, and we went on these under National. No difference!

    The first retreat under Labour was a god-awful budget job, set in a wind-swept motel in Snells Beach. Possibly a nice place in summer, but dull as dish-water in the off-season at this time of year. The cheapness was emphasised by having four of us per motel room.....

  • Hard News: O.G.,

    Back on topic...I caught Peachey last night on TV. Dear god that man is a disgrace, he made it sound as though every single hoodie wearer is up to no good. Rangitoto must have breathed a sigh of relief. It's funny how that crowd can spend days saying we should stop telling business what to do and then turn around and tell everybody not part of the club what to do.

    National Party policy dilemna # 437; what to do about businesses run by guys in hoodies?? [Legit business that is, not, like, drug-dealing or selling stolen goods or stuff] Suggestions on the back of an envelope please to;

    Well, I'm sitting here all roasty toasty in my cardie... BUT I bought my first-ever hoodie on Sunday - such is the marketing power of da PA - and it was great for keeping warm as I worked in the garden. Only took forty mumblemuble years to get around to trying this topical garb.

  • Random Play: Smart Korea Move,

    So as usual at Mangere yesterday I glanced at my ticket (seat 9D) and just waited to be among the last called. When I got on I realised I was actually among the first beckoned: those who need assistance, have children or a rilly rilly rich and ride in comfort.

    Oh damn. I really wanted to apply for one of those grants, but because of a certainly weekly broadcast commitment, I can't go anywhere for more than a couple of days this year. I mean, I'm not complaining, but ...

    Oh god, I walked in to P ublic A ddress and end up in PA rnell with Travel writers and TV stars...

    My upgrade story is landing in Kuala Lumpur after a very long flight from Auckland, arriving at the hotel and finding they'd mixed up my booking and the only room left was the Presidential Suite - an entire floor all to myself. Of course my luggage had missed one of the many connections between Akl and KL, so it was just me and my carry-on bag in a HUGE suite....

  • Southerly: Even More Southerly,

    I suspect that Bob is not as selfless as your well-trained lasses -- he likes to help himself to sips of my beer (which, now that I think of it, is probably illegal for an eight-month-old in a pub).

    You do realise that if he gets drunk and obnoxious it is no longer legal to spank him?!?!

  • Hard News: Laying Down the Law,

    It's nice that Mr McCully has noticed that I join the fun at the Hero Debate. I've only been doing it for three years.

    So you now admit you're a long-time supporter of Labour ... the plot thickens etc.

    To be fair to McCully - you supporting Labour via the Hero Debate isn't news until you get something in return. Donor loans money to the British Labour Party - who cares? Donor receives peerage - news.

    Lord Russel of Brown, Honorary Consul to the Interweb.... hmmm, it has a certain ring to it don't you think!!

  • Hard News: Wellington, you win,

    I sometimes wish that all the people who've come here from elsewhere would bugger off somewhere else, just for five minutes, and leave the place to the REAL Aucklanders

    we noticed that they do bugger off at Xmas, and the peace that reigns over the week to new years week is quite lovely.Dominion rd (and Mt Eden Rd) without cars was worthy of a photo.

    Fourth generation Auckland, first time caller..... I loved being able to park right where I wanted on Ponsonby and Parnell Roads in the glorious post-Xmas period. Bliss......

  • Random Play: They will come, so build it.,

    Heh heh. Don't fall for this folks! I've been on cruises in both Asia and the Med and I can tell you Cruise Visitors have it good when they come to Auckland. Like being able to dock in the heart of the city for starters!

    I second that - I spent six years sailing for Cunard, and visited close to three hundred ports all around the world. Even before the new Hilton was built our facilities were easily in the top ten percent for both quality and location/convenience. The economics of providing a space that can process a thousand or more passengers plus baggage (important if you are an embarkation port like Akl is) is very tricky. Ocean Terminal in Hong Kong is probably the best, and that has the bonus of being a massive stop-end shopping mall too.

    For some reason many of the cruise passengers (not sure if they were from the Queen Vic or another ship) got disgorged into Auckland hotels.

    Auckland is a staging post - those passengers not doing the full Pacific cruise or whatever the ship is on will leave here, and a fresh lot will arrive for the next leg. Hopefully they spend a day or two, and a grand or three, before flying home.

  • Southerly: Religious 'Innovations' for Christmas,

    A sign I saw in a junk shop window in Chapel St, Melbourne last year;
    To the nice young man who wanted to buy pornography for his sister..... I found a November 1983 Playboy for you!

    Unfortunately the shop was closed when I wandered past, so I never found out if it was staffed by another member of the parish coffee circle - whoever it was has great customer skills anyway!!
