thank you for posting all the excellent bike ‘porn’.
Heh. Heh. There's more where that came from, young David ;) ;)
Actually, it's to bike porn that I owe my revived interest in riding bikes. I saw a few pictures of women looking elegant on bikes and realised that I probably COULD do it too, and I stopped finding reasons to not.
A lot of what we try to do at Cycling in Wellington is make riding sexy. It's just good marketing.

• Nice architecture, Copenhagen is a beautiful city, most New Zealand cities fall well short. Christchurch has to aim very high in its rebuilding. I am not that enamoured by New Zealand architecture, which is almost universally banal. If you have nice streets to cycle on, it’s much nicer than feeling you’re cycling in some urban canyon or industrial park.
We'll always need industrial areas, but I reckon that the more people ride their bikes, the more attractive streets become. When you're on a bike you engage more with your surroundings and therefore have something to say about them. Because of this I think bikes are excellent tools for building communities.

Pashley do good bikes, but that’s a hell of a lot of money for an ironic retro singlespeed.
BTW, I might be wrong but I think the Guvnor is a model they've been making since the year dot.

if it’s running the 11-speed Alfine rather than 8-speed, I’m going to start saving up.
I understand that's the next release. Next year, perhaps.
I understand the Linus isn't great quality. Not bad, by any stretch, but for a start welded rather than lugged like the Pashley, and not as comfortable to ride. Pashleys are good quality, generally, and I suspect that you, Jack, would notice the difference.

Sacha - in that case you'll like the TRAFINZ bitchslap takedown submission on that GPS. It's the most cutting thing I've read in a long time - Craig excepted of course. It is bloody hilarious.

I feel for him. I was overseas for a month recently and I missed my bike so badly that I ended up buying a cheap crappy (REALLY crappy) one just so I could ride a little.
This is the problem with bikes. You ride, and then it's like crack or something. My lease ends in October and I've been considering moving out to the Hutt - in part so that I get a decent commute. 15 minutes just isn't cutting it for me.

Or both, more likely :)
+1 for the beautiful Guvnor and I'll put in a(nother) plug for the Civia Loring as an excellent short-distance commuter/errands bike. Alan at ecovelo has got himself a Civia Bryant (belt drive!) as a longer-haul commuter and is writing careful and clear reviews of how it's working in practice.
Both of these are stocked by Velo Ideale.

Heh. You'll forgive me if I don't apologise. Besides, it's a highly moral act you're undertaking, supporting a Christchurch business and all :)

I have a feeling he was talking about the lecturers, although I don't know why I think that. Meanwhile, Mamachari keep running out of bikes because they go out the door faster than they can restore them/ship them in from Japan.

Oh - yes, Mamachari! They've done an enormous amount to popularise bike riding for transport here in Wellington. Absolutely everyone has heard of them - even my bogan-as furniture movers, and everyone knows that you can ride their bikes in a dress too.
