  • Polity: Buying a fight with democracy, in reply to Bart Janssen,

We do not have the same social structure as the US. We do not have the same large communities equivalent to the black and Hispanic communities in the US that can and have been targeted by the Republicans. We do not have the local political structures that allow counties to create electoral laws designed specifically to target specific (poor) voters.

All true. But we do have a bid for exactly the same measure – pointless voter ID demands, unjustified by evidence and likely to suppress the vote to some degree – that is exactly the main problem as in the US. In both countries, there is no meaningful voter fraud. On that basis, I don't think a comparison is unwarranted.

  • Legal Beagle: Cameron Slater: computer hacker?, in reply to Rich of Observationz,

So if I mount an SQL injection attack on a bank, just for hoots

You're saying Hooton is organising bank jobs now?

With Cilla’s passing, a couple more clips.

An unexpected (and pretty good!) duet with Marc Bolan:

And, via Murray Cammick, about as rockin’ as she got on record …

    RIP.

  • Polity: Buying a fight with democracy, in reply to Lilith __,

Invoking Basil Fawlty at him seems in poor taste and bad faith.

I’d say something similar about invoking the Nazi Party at me.

    This is getting very meta.

Too meta and not very productive. Let's move on.

  • Polity: Buying a fight with democracy, in reply to BenWilson,

It’s fair to compare to the Republicans and their drive to exclude voters. There’s pretty much no other good reason to do any of this in a system that isn’t broken.

It seemed that way to me. Obviously, there's a difference in scale, but the comparison itself seems relevant enough.

  • Legal Beagle: Cameron Slater: computer hacker?, in reply to steve black,

So would what Cameron did be seen as “intentionally causing harm by posting a digital communication” if he did it again this week? What is the test of “harm”, and did he do “harm” to the Labour Party? Can you harm an individual? A company? A political party?

He eventually didn't carry through on his threat to republish all of people's private information, but it could be seen that even the threats would cause distress.

I think an interpretation of the law that would mean that what I understand Cameron did was criminal would make illegal a lot of things that I do not think should be illegal, and think that we should be reluctant to interpret the particulars laws in play here in a way that would render a great deal of ordinary computer use subject to prosecution.

I think this is the key thing.

I once wrote a story on the basis of a company's work-in-progress that was sitting unsecured on the internet (albeit in a fashion that would make Labour's server look like Fort Knox).

The parent company sued me and my employer for everything they could think of (including, for some reason, "conversion"). It came to nothing in the end, but I'm very bloody glad they didn't have the option of a criminal complaint.

After K Road I rode down to Silo Park for the birthday thing there, where Anthonie Tonnon was playing. The hands-in-the-air thing is a confidence-building exercise in which he led the crowd – we were all invited to believe we had just popped over from the vast superyacht nearby.

Oh, and in keeping with the theme of the discussion, I bought a vinyl copy of Anthonie's album from him.

I popped in today to K Road’s newest record shop, Rebel Soul Records in Samoa House arcade. It’s a sweet little spot and Tito, the proprietor, has really put some effort into it. Good prices, interesting range of new and pre-loved vinyl, and he’ll be trading and buying as cashflow allows. With Flying Out around the corner and The Hemp Store opening soon nearby, K Road’s culture seems in decent shape.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Not just…, in reply to Geoff Lealand,

I have hopes that more NZ music will be heard on National Radio, with Jessie Mulligan in charge of afternoons. There was quite a bit today (maybe you had a hand in this, Russell?)

Not directly, no. But it does seem the run-of-station music has been given a really good refresh. There's a bit of groove and Jessie played Jamie Xx today!
