  • Up Front: Stand for... Something, in reply to chris,

North Otago landscape no 2 by Colin McCahon

My god I love that. Not for a flag, just for itself.

  • Up Front: Stand for... Something,

A great column by illustrator Toby Morris on what could have been.

  • Up Front: Stand for... Something,

The flag consideration panel published this excellent video from the Designers Institute, explaining the principles of flag design, a couple of months ago.

And then apparently ignored nearly all those principles. This process is off the rails.

  • Hard News: Fine words, some hope, in reply to st ephen,

Perhaps another sign that the libertarian right is well in control of the stodgy, rural, conservative Nats. I guess there are winners and loser in that.

I actually don't think the attitude to law reform is based on political principle at all. It's political risk-averseness – and clearly not helped by what happened with the Psychoactive Substances Act.

Coleman and Key aren't acting on principle when they dismiss reform – and I don't think Simon Power ever voiced a political principle in his life. They just see risk and no upside.

To be fair, Labour also has plenty of this in its ranks.

  • Speaker: The silent minority, in reply to David Hood,

Basically, there is no real difference in there. My suspicion is that as the most recent "age of the internet" has become embedded with day to day lives, any atomisation from the early days has gone away.

Yup. Although you would find the greatest differences in internet use within older New Zealanders, who are overall less likely to be active internet users – but quite likely to vote?

Asian New Zealanders in several surveys are the most intensive internet users, but I'm not sure what their electoral turnout is like. It would be complicated.

You could have a look at the World Internet Project surveys for New Zealand, which are conducted by AUT.

But one of the first things being looked at here is a destigmatisation programme - *possibly* along the lines of the Like Minds, Like Mine mental health work. That could be a bloody important piece of work.

Hell yes. Especially having a story due out any day with Matters of Substance that highlights the damage stigma does.

Finally, the Drug Harm Index refresh - we understand this is being led by Ministry of Health this time, not the Police.

Woo-hoo! That's more than an "update" or "refresh"! I am immensely cheered by this.

It didn't really fit within the ambit of a strategic document, but one thing the government can do to cut the number of drug deaths is get with the damn programme and approve naloxone for widespread use.

  • Polity: BURGERGASM,

I'm also a fan of the classic tofu burger with satay sauce, but tofu sucks if you don't fry it just right.

    Homemade burgers are the best.

They are. And fun to make.

Next best is the Angel Bay range of frozen pre-cooked patties. I buy them in the big wholesale pack from Gilmour's (they work out just over a dollar each) and keep them around for dinner emergencies, along with frozen buns. They're good.

  • Polity: BURGERGASM, in reply to Bart Janssen,

IF the meat is minced on site and again IF chefs and kitchen are good quality you can eat the meat raw with again very little risk, much less risk than you took driving to the burger joint.

    Mmmm ... steak tartare.

A well-prepared dish of raw steak is a fine thing.
