Hard News: The scandal that keeps on giving, in reply to
I feel sorry for her. Having been down a similar route (without the money, fame and glamour part) and come back, I sure as hell wouldn't want to have been trying to clean up in public.

Yeah, I know. The whole “Wendy Deng = Anna Nicole Smith if her brains were as large as tits + gold-digging homewrecker x scheming Dragon Lady” meme isn’t objectionable at all. My bad.
None of which I had any intention of implying. None of which I even remotely believe. As the proud possessor of a pair of big tits, I am all for them. FYI, I am a celtic-Pakeha + Maori hybrid; my partner and father of my children is likewise with a good dash of Chinese added.
As Ian Dalziel says, poor wee Amy Winebox should dominate the rags for the next few days with the Norwegian massacre for the more serious-minded. So pfffft, Murdoch's immediate problems go. Just goes to show, girls can't do hard drugs and get away with it.

Dunno what's patronising about noting that she's very clever, utterly ruthless. Read the WSJ piece listed by Stephen Judd. An ideal match for Rupe. She's also a mother of children by a media baron who is noted for his ambitions to create and continue a corporate dynasty.

Screwed by Daddy and Wendi? What she really, really wants is control of News to go to her angels. Lachie, tick. James, tick. Then when Rupe dies, Wendi takes over as "Princess Regent"...It's beautiful, there are so many layers and so many years left of this story. Yesterday on Twitter someone linked to a video clip on Chinese TV, spoken in English; an interview with Rupe and Wendi from about June 25. Worth a watch if anyone can find it; unfortunately I cannot resurrect it.

A real estate agent told me yesterday (I know, I know but this good stuff, promise) that all Christchurch rebuild claims (on all land zones) from one insurance company at least are now going to Scotland for the fine-toothcomb treatment. And that those previously classified as rebuilds are now being reclassified into repair status. Thought this may be useful to a reader.

I've come in so late on this thread, but does anyone else think Wendi set up the pie attack? That theory works on so many levels. I particularly enjoyed Rupert's "I'm just a forgetful old tyrant" schtick.
As for micro-managing, Rupe did, at random throughout the empire and just enough to keep the middle management hopping. Hard to believe he wasn't following such a crucial-to-credibility drama like the phone tapping one.

I get your point; apologies for my one-dimensional reading. Hmmm; who knows, are we as a nation even big enough to bother the likes of Murdoch? Not that he's a presence in NZ now. (Though when he owned INL one would hear occasional tales from ashen-faced printers of coming across The Beast himself pulling out page-proof drawers and having a look after midnight. Probably more to check the ad ratio than the content I imagine.)

Individual contracts? Yes they've been big for well over 15 years (exact date eludes me). Surprising who sold out; and not so surprising who didn't want anyone else to know....
The lily-livers would still keep the luvly pension pot if they went though, especially luscious if it dated from the INL (Murdoch) days. -

As I follow this scandal I am oscillating wildly between the joy of watching a deserved come-uppance unfold, and horror at the emerging evidence of just how far the rot goes. We might once have suspected, but now we know.
Without a local Guardian equivalent, how would we find out about something like this in New Zealand?
The Screws of the World have always been scumbags; and well-known for it in the industry. The latest revelations are only a little worse than usual, the difference is they've been found out.
In New Zealand, the story budgets just aren't big enough to corrupt anyone, let alone employ a decent hacker. Think about it: would a MacDonalds coffee in a takeaway cup be enough for you to sell your soul?
