Craig I generally read the Gruaniad because of the confirmation bias. I temper it with Aunty's web news and a dalliance with The Times. I do make a point of reading the Torygraph's sports reporting though, it is by far the best and is wonderful enterntainment when the All Blacks come calling, this year thinking that PI bashing might be a bit racist they decided some cultural insensitivity would be good and with the Times bleated about the Haka. It was fun reading it after the Twickers tests though. The Welsh weren't half grumpy mind, the media was all 'aren't England shit?', 'why are England shit?' and 'how can we pull England a bit higher up out of the cesspit?' and just one match report of Wales beating Oz.
The one that got away though, it would have been absolutely wonderful if Scotland had managed to kick some goals and beat SA and then seen them thump England so hard.

Niall Ferguson's Vanity Fair story on the history of the credit explosion is a top read.
Russ, he has a series called The History of Money on Channel 4 here in the UK at the moment. It is very good and he is good. He makes the bond market look interesting which is no small feat. Grab it if you find it um, lying around in cyberspace or DVD.

I suppose I should say I never saw, or don't remember seeing the original Survivors so can't comment on how the new one measures up.

Just watched the first episode of survivors on the watch again cable feature. It finished and I noticed the 2nd one was on live, never mind, watch it tommorrow.
Anyway, I thought it was good. Criticisable in terms of minor stuff but well acted and quite effective. Nice plot, interesting mix of characters. A good start anyway and better than a lot of stuff on tv. I watched it because here in the UK even with a gazillion cable channels at 8pm it is a desert of watchable stuff. If it wasn't for watch again etc i'd have to do something radical, like read a book or summat.

Little Britain was all about nasty sneering humour at the little people, the deffenceless, the weird, the marginalised. In essence those who couldn't hit back. Give me Bremner, Bird and Fortune any day, though I suspect you don't get that in NZ. Even That Michell and Webb Look.

@Sacha
Yes, I ADORED The Tommorrow People when it was first shown. But i strongly suspect I would cringe if i saw it again after all these years. Be good for the kids though, great concept, wonderful stimulus for the imagination.

If they're going to reboot anything, it should be Blakes 7. Truly original bastard sci-fi.
The Library in Finchley in North London had the complete series of B7 on VHS when we lived there. Over maybe 8 months I worked my way through the whole thing. Rumour is that Paul Darrow is trying to remake it or make new episodes.
Russell Brand as Ian
Lets have RB as far away from anything as we can, ok? He can't act and isn't funny. I can do without him gurning at the camera every two seconds.

@Rich
Got a reference?
Try an undergraduate immunology textbook. I am a mere physiologist, immunology is simply details dear boy.

If a parent feels something is harmful or just unpleasant they should
make representations against it.Proof that Jesus was a virologist, the meek shall inherit the earth. The injunction about eating pork for the children of the book wasn't because of Trichosomiasis from the meat, it was to lessen the chances of bird flu using pigs as an intermediate incubator for human 'flu.

It's all to do with the difference between acute and chronic stress and how your immune system reacts to them. When we encounter an acute stress, like say moving house, then our immune systems ramp up in response, so we fight bugs better (it's also why being fit is good for your health). However if the stress continues for too long (or you over train) then the immune system can't sustain the effort and actually declines. So that is why you get the phenomenon of going through stressful period and then when it ends and you relax, blam you get bug, because your super immune system just lost its stimulus and either the virus you were keeping under control got away or one of the many floating around finally found you a less hostile home.
