  • Hard News: After Len, in reply to Sacha,

It doesn’t help civic discourse when a major media outlet’s local govt specialist reporter either does not grasp or is willing to misrepresent who determined the structures.

That was such a weird thing to write. The structures – with the exception of the Maori statutory board (which had to wait for councillors to set a budget) and the advisory panels – were put in place by the government.

Note that Hide made a pig’s arse of the Maori statutory board requirements too.

But one thing strikes me as odd: Len's council equalised rates before equalising services. This seems to undermine the logic of amalgamation.

I believe they were required by central government to introduce a unified rating system within three years. Hence the pain.

  • Speaker: The real balance sheet, in reply to Rosemary McDonald,

    Kirsty Johnston.

An absolute champ who upends every round she takes on and shakes out the stories.

For the the flak it gets, the Herald in general provides more support for investigative reporting than any other news organisation in the country.

  • Speaker: The real balance sheet,

Thanks Tim. It’s probably also worth observing that while Paula and Eugene were working on the Teina Pora story, they did so on top of their regular duties. They didn’t have the luxury of disappearing for years on a story, they just worked harder.

  • Hard News: A cog in the Mediaworks machine, in reply to Alfie,

It seems the new-found austerity at MediaWonks isn’t being applied across the board. MediaWorks has bought “hundreds of bottles” of wine over the past year from… wait for it… Mark Weldon’s Terra Sancta winery. I guess that sort of expenditure is approved when the boss gets to clip the ticket.

This is actually outrageous. The Mediaworks cost squeeze would dictate $10 wines from the supermarket. Buying bulk distressed inventory from the CEO at twice that price is ... well, you know what it is.

Righto folks. This isn't going to resolve and I'm closing the thread. I hope it's a nice day where you are and if it is, I recommend a little time in the sun.

  • Speaker: Are there opportunities within…, in reply to Mary Meldrum,

Katharine, I don’t think you did anything so seriously wrong that brought on that reaction from others. But thanks for sharing your personal trigger. I still think you were bullied. It is common in my experience that the person bullied feels the need to ‘apologise’ .

I am very aware of these things and while I thought some of the response was unhelpful, the main problem was Katharine not being able to stop hammering her point. For reasons I don't really want to go into, some of the things she said were insensitive and hurtful to others. I'm sure this wasn't intentional.

I'm impressed with the clarity and sincerity of what she's said and as far as I'm concerned the matter is settled. If people think the issue itself is talked out, I'm happy to close the thread.

Hi all. I put Katharine’s posts on moderation on Friday. I’ve switched that off again, but I don’t seem to have got the email to release this one she posted today (in response to Sacha:

how do your friends react when you dole out advice like this?

Hi folks. Sorry about the other night. This question was the one that really stopped me in my tracks. The answer is I didn’t – I didn’t say anything, She was my best friend and I didn’t try to help her – her diabetes and size were (until very close to the end) an unspoken thing between us. When it came her time to need dialysis, she choose not to commence that treatment.

Our friendship was a lovely story with a tragic ending.

Funny thing is, until Sacha asked me this question, I didn’t even realise why I was so desperate to try and get my point across. So again, sorry, I behaved badly but maybe Karen was with me in that moment. I don’t know.
