  • Hard News: Dunce Dunce Revolution,

Back to standards for a moment

Daniel Tammet is a really clever guy with Aspergers whose autobiography ‘Born on blue day’ has some really interesting reflections on what worked and didn't in his own education. His second book ‘Embracing the Wide’ sky tackles topics such as measuring minds, what is intelligence, IQ testing, memory etc. He shows that the 'one size fits all' type of assessment- which the national standards testing regime encourages- is the opposite of what is required for many children, and is instead a disincentive for them
    .
These standards also have a requirement that students can show the workings of their answers. Many idiosyncratic thinkers like Daniel come to the correct answers in unusual ways and are frustrated and confused by the 'normal' ways that are expected. Many of them think visually and in patterns which are not easy to describe.

He shows that IQ is culturally constructed by devising a test from the perspective of a North Queensland Aboriginal tribe. Similarly, what will strawberries mean to refugee children in our low decile schools?

He also talks about embedding ideas and illustrates this by discussing the concept ‘spider’. From a literacy perspective you learn about spelling but a scientific approach asking a question like ‘Is a spider an animal?’ leads to more challenging thinking and embedded memory.

A great book from an inspiring thinker, and very relevant to this current discussion.

Linking back to discussion earlier in the thread here is a curiosity from the WW1 Waimate Red Cross Cookery Book

    Homeopathic Pudding

(From Mrs B. Shears of Hunter)

Line a basin with bread cut about half inch thick. Pour into it stewed black currants and put a piece of bread on top. When cold turn out and serve with boiled custard or cream.

(So a sort of prototype summer pudding - but what is the homeopathic link? Incidentally, found this inherited recipe book between other treasures, 'Household Poultry Keeping' Bulletin No 336 Animal Industry Division, Dept of Agriculture,1954, and 'The New Hypnotherapy' from the Professional Hypnotherapists' Institute of NZ Inc,c1960s)

Joe - 'familiar manner'. I couldn't even remember her name at first and then provided it in the thread above - her name is Deb Webber (doesn't seem to be Deborah). Doesn't seem overly familiar to me. 'Vulture-like opportunism' - as far as I know - from the Breakfast interview - she only offered to help if asked. It might seem strange but some people would be very happy for a psychic to be brought in if someone they loved went missing. Part of the 'toolkit'.

Nigel Latta was the sceptical psychologist Sensing Murder brought in to observe on one of their programmes and he provided an interesting perspective.

Joe - she's not my precious Deb Webber. I was just wondering whether there had in fact been any behind the scenes discussions between her and the police team. Where's Nigel Latta when we need him?

But Stephen, people do tend to fear what we do not understand or find threatening. That seems to be the basis of religious fundamentalism. I just thought some of the comments here and on other threads reveal a fundamentalism of another kind.

Psychics, physics - may be closer than we think.

(OK I am winding people up now - I remember an earlier discussion that mentioned What the Bleep down the Rabbit Hole, and don't want to go there again)

What are you guys so fearful about? That there may be things beyond our current comprehension?

It wasn't so many centuries ago that women were burnt as witches because they challenged the status quo and the power hierarchies. Mediums and some alternative healers could just be continuing this tradition.

The area had been thoroughly searched already and according to the Dompost today they re-searched on a 'hunch'. The DP is also making the same link with Deb Webber's comments last week.
What I am asking is was there any behind the scenes work involving the medium and if so, was the information useful. Just interested.

Sorry to threadjack but can I just note the sad news that the the missing toddler has been found down a drain, just as the medium on Breakfast suggested the other day? A suggestion which caused such outrage. I wonder if there was any behind the scenes work between her and the police to locate this place?

Although the <<Older and Newer>> links are very useful they don't take you right to the top.
