  • Hard News: Gay, but really not happy,

Good point, RB, but really just one aspect of a wider problem. Gay people are surely getting short-changed, but who isn’t? Outside of Wells’ programmes, TVNZ’s local content is entirely irrelevant to my life.

It really is a stunning situation that genuinely brilliant creative artists in Auckland (and elsewhere, no doubt) struggle, literally going hungry for years, while TVNZ flushes $600,000 down the toilet over a project that we could all see was seriously misguided from the start (what is that anyway, $200 per hour for 3000 hours of writing??!).

I’ve worked in television. It’s not rocket science; it’s not magic. $600k for “script development” of a tacky soap in a country of 4 million people is an absolute disgrace, even if they had managed to get to air with it.

If TVNZ is not fulfilling its charter obligations – as seems the case – relevant Ministers need to stop fretting about accusations of “political interference” and do something about it. As it is, the TVNZ executives and the content providers who have them in their pockets are like Soviet Generals stuffing themselves with state-funded caviar, while the populace queues all day for stale bread.

[O/T, but next time you get the site worked on, how about making the "preview" function automatically scroll to the bottom of the page, since it is, by definition, necessary to do this anyway.]

  • Hard News: That's Entertainment,

YES, CDS ARE TOO LOUD. You can’t even call it “compression” anymore; more like bleedin’ “decapitation”. They just chop the peaks clean off, leaving a jagged edge that cuts through the brain like a miniature Skilsaw. It’s criminal!

  • Hard News: Bad men,

Note this, suppression of which was lifted yesterday:

[T]he man who originally investigated the allegations is charged with attempting to obstruct or defeat the course of justice.

Former detective inspector John Dewar, who denies the charges, led the Rotorua CIB and handled Ms Nicholas' accusation that she was pack raped by Clint Rickards, Brad Shipton and Bob Schollum between September 1985 and December 1986. (source: NZHerald)

  • Hard News: Bad men,

I understand that police officers have no code of conduct or code of ethics.

From my experience of police officers, I'd tend to agree, but I guess that's not what you meant.

I believe it is the case that NZ Police officers have an obligation not to "bring the NZ Police into disrepute". Some of Rickards' comments yesterday, and perhaps during the trials, might be construed as contravening this obligation.

  • Hard News: Bad men,

The NZ Herald for once seemed to rub two brain cells together with this excellent burn:

“…Mrs Shipton replied: "Absolutely, absolutely. I have stood by my husband every step of the way and that will continue.
"What I can say is that the verdicts speak for themselves - I told the truth."

When pushed further and asked, "Do the verdicts from Mt Maunganui speak for themselves?" Mrs Shipton refused to answer and walked off.”

The sad fact is that 25-year-old rape complaints are almost never going to be resolved satisfactorily. In the court of public opinion these guys are banged to rights. I guess that’s the best we can hope for.

My thoughts now are with every poor bastard who’s been on the receiving end of a prosecution based on evidence provided by these clearly disreputable men.

  • Hard News: Launching into raunch,

They happily sing the lyrics because they think they're about milkshakes. It's adults and their broader awareness that turns those things into (inappropriately) sexy.

How about when the Pussycat Dolls sing "I know you should be fucking me"?

  • Hard News: The Arguments,

It cracks me up when people judge others based on one comment. Personally, I think that's kinda fucked up.

In my experience, the only way to get to some sort of consensus on essentially unanswerable moral questions like this, is to rigourously test opposing theses against each other. How thoughtful is our position if we simply agree to agree on the currently fashionable politico-moral standpoint and then pepper any challenges to it with personal abuse?

BTW, I hit a kid once - not hard - because he pulled a knife on me. I immediately felt that I'd over-reacted, when I saw how frightened he was; haven't done that since, but who know's?. So, that's my personal position. Please let me know if I am now politically acceptable.

  • Hard News: The Arguments,

Despite vigorous debate, one solid fact shines through: all of us know innately what’s right and what’s wrong, not because it is the Word of the Lord, which must be obeyed.

So, the question remains: how do we identify the ones who do not know right from wrong, and then isolate and re-educate them?
