If one were using a conspiracy theorist lens, you could see how the MEAA stirs things up, and PJ takes advantage of it somewhat.
That does appear to be where the unons have gone with this.
Given that Peter Jackson had tried to make sure the films would be made in NZ since he genuinely likes working here and he has considerable loyalty to the local industry it's very hard to see why he would conspire against himself to have the films made overseas.
As for money, PJ would be getting a fee plus residuals that are not influenced by whatever money the govt throws at Warners. The residuals that the actors will be getting are based on box-office takings not profits and I guess that's what PJ will get as well. No-one would rely on the studios determination of profit if they didn't have to.

Whipp is a poisonous individual, little wonder Warners don't take his assurances about not sabotaging The Hobbit at face value.
He's more than willing to spend time and energy destroying a low budget indie short film to further his ambitions.
-
I can't figure this one out. Why would Simon Whipp care if Oz actors have to speak in an American accent?
Whipp's interests aren't so much in the working conditions of actors but rather in becoming a major industry player who gets to decide what movies get made where.

while I'm at it, I know a couple of people who auditioned for Sparticus, before it was well know what it's main selling point would be, and were quite taken aback when they were asked to strip down.
Now that could have been an issue AE could have worked on. But didn't. WTF as they say.

Whether or not one likes Mr Tappert's shows or not...
I never said I didn't like his programmes or didn't see the benefit they have had, I just said what the are. It's not some elitist judgement, rather pointing out the rather curious choices JWL has made.
-
"Simply that face-to-face dialogue, with no purpose other than dialogue, is extremely effective at stopping things spiralling out-of-control unnecessarily when formal communications don't seem to be getting anywhere."
face to face dialogue with RM and JWL has shown them to be uncertain of what they want and uncertain about the truth. Those two with a little help managed to have this spiral out of control.
Jackson all along was giving them good advice. RM and JWL have shown themselves to be completely immune to that, I don't see how PJ can be held reponsible for their failings.
They say they just want to sit down and talk but everytime I've seen them sit down and talk they have done their cause a diservice. They can't say what they want. They have no idea of the consequnces of what they are doing. They change their story. Why on earth would anyone with the pressure of directing and producing such a project want anything to do with them.
-
That's what Sparticus is. Xena with less clothes. if JWL has an issue with nudity she picked a very strange target.
-
Jaymax, what would PJ see in sitting down to have a dialogue with JWL. She was trying to shut down his production for demnds she couldn't even formulate.
Except for some bizarre stuff about nudity. And that from someone who's husband makes in NZ soft-core porn for the US trailer trash market. How come she didn't target Sparticus?
And PJ did advise them that he was the wrong targert. Talk to SPADA. They refused to take advice.

Unfortunately, other acting unions around the world...
I think the significance of the SAG alert tends to get lost. The American union can take away the union card of a member who works on a movie that SAG deems to be non-union. With no union card you can't work.
That's the threat held over your head.
It's not necessarily a bad system but it's very real world, real world consequnces and having AE wander aimlessly around from one half-formulated position to another like none of this matters is, well, I can't think of the words.

I imagine some sound local negotiating advice from the CTU may have helped with that.
The CTU contributed wild conspiracy therories and calling Jackson a spoilt brat. I don't think that helped.
The CTU also continue to maintain that it is or is not completetly in the hands of the MEAA. Depending on which press release one reads.
Kelly has shown no signs of being aware of what's been going on. But she's been very certain that Jackson is just another boss-class exploiter of workers.
