  • Hard News: Bob each way,

I'll agree they've put Helen in a bit of a spot, but if John Key wants to use McGehan Close to score political points, he better stop refering to it as being in "South Auckland", as he did when talking to Havoc on bFM this morning.

  • Random Play: Rock Follies,

After the battle, flung far and used.
    Where does the surplus lie?
Sometimes when all of your boots, and all your canteens,
Have lost milit'ry value in just one moment.
And all of us anxious, for gas camping stoves -
The sales on here and now.
Oh so why are you waiting - waiting for what?
    There's further reductions in store-

So shop at Doyles, I'll shop at Doyles too...
You'll like Doyles - 'cos I like Doyles, truth...

Oh god, what have I done....

    Coconut Rough: Sierra Calzone

Tough times for 80s popsters meant striking an ad deal with a successful Auckland cafe chain, singing the praises of their baked 'pizza with a lid' on commercial radio.

"And they'll put it in the oven for you, if you want them if you want them to..."

  • Hard News: Doing the Rounds,

I was 6 when the Tour took place, and it's burned in my memory. My Dad used to be on a roster of guys sleeping at their clubrooms in case of anti-Tour vandalism. I remember watching the marchers in the streets of Whangarei, and can still remember the words of their chants. I knew Jon Minto's name when I was in primary school.

I guess Mr Key was too busy studying at the library? Or pelicaning with some mates from over in Engineering?

  • Hard News: Doing the Rounds,

I know exactly what you mean about Jesus Camp. I've only watched the trailer and it was enough to unnerve me. Hitler Youth anyone?

I guess the consolation is the fact that (apprently - I think you quoted someone on it Russell?) the high water mark of Fundamentalism has been and gone in the US. Though, like all movements on the decline, I guess we'll start to see less Fun and more Mental...

  • Speaker: The Hollow Men: Initial Impressions,

A Brethren with email??? He must be the mole.

This is the funny thing with the EB, in my experience. They avoid communications technology like it's Satan's own, yet they'll happily get others to use it for them.

A few years ago, my employer had a large EB-owned business as a client. They would take documents to the firm next door, ask them to fax them to us, and in turn we'd fax stuff back for the EB to collect.

They would also ask us to research stuff online for them - anything of use to them would be printed out as a hard copy for them to read.

I guess you can't sup with the devil, but it's okay to sup with those who sup with the devil?

  • Island Life: Citizen Key,

Just to pull together the diverging threads a bit - on Friday, a colleague and I noticed that, in some photos, John Key has the EXACT same hairstyle as Hitler except that it is parted on the other side.

The image people might want to address that ASAP.

  • Island Life: Citizen Key,

just as National doesn't 'own' the votes of every Christ's College old boy or farmer's daughter.

Couldn't agree more Craig. Just like the 'statehouse = underbelly of society' stereotype, the 'farming family = privilege' stereotype is an unfair one that has hung around for a long time.

There was nothing privileged about being part of the rural economy through the mid-80s to mid-90s. We used to eat roast mutton several times a week - because we had bugger all for groceries, and the sheep were as good as worthless anyway.
