  • Capture: Two Tales of a City,

A study in Philadelphia found significant health and social benefits from greening vacant sections. I hope we can do a lot more of this here in Chch.

  • Legal Beagle: A matter of conscience, in reply to Tim McKenzie,

the book doesn’t describe God doing horrible things to Job; it describes satan challenging God to do horrible things to Job. God declines to harm Job, but allows satan to harm him, within limits.

Secondly, only one wife is mentioned, and she isn’t killed.

I stand corrected about the wives. Only Job’s 10 children were killed! Of course he can have some more later.

God allows Satan to test Job’s righteousness by killing of all his children, and taking from him all of his livestock, and by harming his body…I don’t think this is the action of a loving God.

And all this because Job's such a good guy! His kids are collateral damage in a round of point-scoring between God and Satan.

  • Up Front: Making It Better, in reply to Kumara Republic,

Minister Bennett would apply her ‘tough love’ to deadbeat dads

Quite. And I hate how Bennett uses the rhetoric of reproductive choice to say that women have to take charge of contraception because men are too unreliable!

Bennett said because women were most affected by pregnancy, they needed the support.

"I agree it is a mutual responsibility, but women want to take responsibility for their own bodies and choices, and this means they can, because it is not saying it's all their fault, rather that it's them who ends up carrying the baby, so they want to be sure they take precautions."

She said although men could receive funded vasectomies, women always took a risk in trusting a man was safe.

"I have women tell me their partner said not to worry because everything was safe. Are you going to take that risk?"

    Source.

But this brilliance cheered me up.

  • Legal Beagle: A matter of conscience, in reply to Chris Waugh,

I fear I might finally convince myself to disappear up a mountain and go feral, ancient Daoist poet-style.

My only contact with Daoism was a book called The Tao of Pooh which I read as a teenager. So someone mentions Daoism, I think of teddy bears. :-s

I wouldnt want to impose on anyone Lilith

Hm, I doubt it would be an imposition! My household's in a state of flux at present (not in a bad way, just changes) but there might well be a spare room here at some point. I'm sure that between all of us Chchers, we can come up with something!

I think we'll all be grieving for a long time about places gone, whether private or public. This might sound trivial compared to the loss of a home, but I'm really sad about the loss of Whitewash Head, one of my special places in Chch, windblown vantage point above the sea, site of many picnics and gatherings of friends.

Sorry to hear about your family places, Islander, that must be really hard. So you'd need somewhere to stay?

Lincoln events centre: 21st-23rd November -Te Taumutu hosting-

Fantastic! But it's a long way in the future -- do tell us if you're likely to be in Otautahi before then. We could all attempt to drink ourselves to death with chilli shockolades. Or something. :-) Arohanui to you.
