  • Hard News: Little pieces of a big picture,

I have a friend staying from Washington. She's been inundated since yesterday morning by concerned messages from her friends. She's had to explain NZ geography to them and that the earthquake was in the south island and she is in the north.

  • Busytown: The shakes,

In Wellington I was woken by the shock - enough to wake up and get under a doorway, and later by an aftershock. Thought no big deal as that is quite common here. Couldn't really believe it when I heard at 7am that it was Christchurch that got the big one this time. Have a friend who moved to Darfield because he didn't like Wellington's earthquake threat. Hope he's OK. Just off to check on our earthquake kit then collect an overseas visitor. And listening to Kim Hill and Mary Wilson doing great reporting on RNZ.
    Best thoughts to people affected.

And we had this really weird fierce hail storm last night and ice is still all over the garden.

  • Hard News: Warning: contains pieces of Apple,

Brenda, there is something seriously depressing and lonely about that video. Substitute something else similarly mythical and addictive for foreign exchange dealing and it could be science fiction, or a documentary on a strange cult. Young brains that will burn out after only a few years, but the toy Porsche makes it all worth while. That wierd opulence of the silver tree-lined foyer of the DFC symbolises the introverted decadence of that pre-1987 crash era. (Most shocking to me, however, was the same 1987 duvet cover that I just found in my cupboard - what does that mean?)

  • Random Play: So. I'm off Te Radar again,

I was fortunate to win tickets through Public Address for Eating the Dog when it was in Wellington a couple of months ago. I like people who popularise history and Te Radar does it in a gentle and non-threatening way, and the last night at Downstage was a sell-out which was good for all concerned. It wasn't perfect - repellent title, far too male, and unreferenced (I like clear attributions on historical documentation). But he's open to suggestions and the show apparently grows and adapts as it goes around NZ, and he also generously offers it as a fundraiser to local community groups. He also says nice things about his mother. I'm now a fan.

  • Hard News: Meaning well with the money…,

Blaming Michael Cullen is very unfair. A lot of his work has been undone by this government. They could have removed the guarantee too if they wanted.

  • Hard News: The Southern Apps,

My workplace has a morning tea tradition of doing the Dominion Post 5 minute quiz. Today one young person enlightened the rest of us about the Grinder app.
