  • Hard News: Some Monday Things,

Perhaps we should have ordered up that waterfront stadium after all.

No shit. It was always a good idea.

  • Hard News: Problems,

Maybe, just maybe, if people were more interested in history than fantasy then we might not be in this mess.

I didn't do it. I did what I could to avoid it. My carefully considered votes were like dust in the wind.

So now, between sessions in the bar, shouting at the tides with my mates, solving all the world's problems (pretty much boils down to being a lack of artisan crafted cider, as it turns out), I entertain myself with good honest documentaries like BSG and Sarah Connor.

Yeah, the problem must be my fantasy life.

    Gimme a break.

  • Hard News: Problems,

I managed to grab Tory! Tory! Tory!, the BBC doco about the rise of Thatcherism, in the words of those who were there.

There's only one documentary I want to talk about, and that's the BSG series finale.

    But I won't, 'cos I'm not a spoiler.

(Yes this is apropos of nothing. Suck it.)

  • Hard News: Siren song,

I refuse to run Vista, even in a virtual box. When I have to use Windows, it's XP sp2 which is as solid as Windows gets.

I've been using Vista 64 SP1 for I don't know how long, it's the most stable OS I've ever seen. (I haven't used Windows 7 yet, so don't know if I'll like that more or the same, but it sounds like "more" is odds on favourite.)

In fact I'm so happy with Vista that I've started to wonder if the whole Vista hatred bandwagon is some kind of ironic joke that everyone else is in on, but that I just don't get.

Seriously, it's been so good for me. Everything always works and it has never, ever, ever crashed. Ever.

(Actually it's not true that everything works, there's an obsolete Cisco VPN client that refuses to install - by design. They specifically detect 64 bit windows and refuse to continue. But that's it.)

  • Up Front: The Missionary Position,

I prefer enjoying beauty to understanding it.

    I find beauty in understanding.

  • Up Front: The Missionary Position,

Missed this until Emma dropped it just now:

Remember that the most beautiful things in the world are the most useless, peacocks and lilies for instance.

Subjective of course, but I'm still compelled to disagree. Both that lilies & peacocks (what is more garish? their very name has become a synonym for strutting men in single minded pursuit of a lukewarm hole - the very least interesting people in any bar) are among the most beautiful things in the world, and that beautiful things are useless.

I find people pretty beautiful, and I also find that people are the most useful things in our world. (This perception might be a little affected by the huge number of pregnant women in my life at present. Everyone seems to have discovered their uterus, all at once.)

And the most useful, well designed, functional things, also tend to be the most attractive - take the time to cast your eye over the aesthetics of an old, well used, well organised workshop some time. Everything with a job, and everything with a place.

    But still, subjective.

  • Up Front: The Missionary Position,

But the catholic church has a lot to say. And if you are going to divorce Jesus from the church whats the point.

Seems to me that the central point of Christianity is loving Jesus and believing he's the son of God, and God.

So perhaps our dear friend loves teh Christ, and enjoys the sense of community or singing or whatever he gets from his church - even though their doctrine is un-christ-like, and not prima facie compatible with his sexuality.

__ I think Morgan was making the observation that science agrees that spirit is intangible. Which is literally true.__

I dont think the beast called science agrees then. Neuroscience tho is making inroads into explaining thissupposedly intangible called spirituality which so far looks to be a product of our minds. So maybe enmasse we should make an effort to accept this as a possibility.

It was a play on words.

Science, so far (and I predict: forever), says that everything about us, including love and joy and art and our sad predilections for magical thinking and invisible friends in the sky, come from the soup of chemicals in our heads. i.e. that the "spirit" doesn't really exist - at least as most people understand the word. (As more or less a synonym for "soul".)

    That's all.

  • Speaker: Copyright Must Change,

I think he was pretty clear. Do you think you see some subtext in what Simon said?

  • Hard News: Self-satisfactorily Yours,

Or wait four years and then get them all on DVD at once (currently working through season 3 of BSG).

You're in for a treat when you get to season 4. Everything post the mid-season break has been... intense.

Can't quite believe there's so little of it left to go, and I don't have any idea what's going to happen.

Make sure you watch Razor as well, not sure if that'll be on DVD.

  • Up Front: The Missionary Position,

I find a simple, fierce 'PISS OFF' will suffice.

Yeah, 'cos there's nothing people COLLECTING FOR CHARITY deserve more than a good shouting at.

I find that telling people I'm not interested tends to work pretty well, without any raging or barking required. You know, acting with civility, and letting people keep their dignity, even if they have disrupted my peaceful enjoyment.

    But whatever works for you.

What don't these people get about the concept of spirit being intangible?

    Science agrees.

haha The best illustration of the human minds ability to compartmentalise I've seen in a long time. Neuroscience would have a feild day with your thoughts, I suggest submitting yourself for study.

Jesus didn't have all that much to say about The Gays, perhaps that makes a difference to him.
