  • Island Life: Sorted for E's and Votes,

how the US military signed up a mentally challenged youth despite his parents objections but alas my googling skills are not great and all I got was this (albeit shocking - 17 y.o. lured with promise of X-box)

i have a friend who served in the Chemical Corps of the US Army in Vietnam, one of the first drafts. when he'ds finished his tour he was offered a brand new Corvette Stingray and promotion to Sergeant if he would do another tour. he declined the offer.

m, that sounds like Rousseau's transition from amour propre to amour de soi. well, except for women in the air and stuff.

    nice blog webweaver.
thanks for a good thread Anke - shame it was superceded by events so soon. i think the ethics of that smocking needs a lot more debate though.

  • Hard News: The Civility Code,

i prefer the idea of heaven below, it makes sense when it's 5 degrees below zero on the surface.
you know for the Bedouin, Heaven is above, but it is always overcast, and thus not too hot.

  • Hard News: Compromise,

Nice post Russell. And big ups to Paul L for the great work he does at Fundy Post

Ian Mackay: John Key has managed an extraordinary about face for his party. The Repeal of the Section 59 of the Child Discipline Bill, has not been changed one little bit. The so-called Amendment simply states what already exists. The police have always had "discretion" in deciding whether a situation, (such as hitting your kid) is important enough to warrant charges being laid. So nothing was changed yesterday except that National can be on the "winning" side thus avoiding the inevitable backlash later, and avoid being associated with the extremists. A Bill was so wrong on Tuesday and so right on Wednesday. Amazing. Either John Key and his team have totally misunderstood the repeal of Section 59, or they have been hoodwinked by a clever piece of smoke and mirrors.

I/S: or they realized this gave them cover to back down while being able to claim that they had in fact won

    exactly

David Ritchie: Anybody care to remember what Simon Barnett had to say when Dwayne Francks, was jailed for actual, real child abuse? Anybody? Anybody?

umm, I'd love to. Can you remind us David?

amphetamine has been used in modern combat for decades, particularly with pilots - although there are problems with disinhibition. there have also been trials of PCP as a combat drug because of its ability to elevate aggression and suppress pain, although i gather heavily armed men on PCP have proved a bit unmanagable. whodda thunkit.

as for dogs on P, well i heard there are also organized gangs of armed dogs manufacturing the stuff. there's been a few kennel raids but mostly they're being kept quiet.

  • Hard News: The Civility Code,

interesting essay m. we are indeed frightened of the thanatic in this world.
i would have said Wotan was more of a Gods God but i take your point. the Wotan Clan. and i see the Antinomists originated in C16th Chermany, around the same time as the Rosicrucians, whose symbol is also that of negation.

  • Hard News: The Civility Code,

that little Austrian would have said he was reclaiming it. the terroritory was Bohemia. what i do have from my grandparents are some rather disturbing car badges that were all the rage in Chermany in the late 30s, but that's also another story. did most of the cross-country in the very far North, where the snow is a bit deep for horses. i expect they're a bugger for accuarcy too.

and yes, from whence did the snake come if not from God?
