  • Southerly: Primary School for Beginners,

In my primary school years (mid 60s) each room had a coal stove for heating (this was an old city school probably built in the 20s with 30ft ceilings and a few 50s prefabs all painted govt-issue yellow) - the caretaker would come in early and light them but it would be teacher's responsibility to keep them going - they used to blow back when the wind blew and more than one teacher crumpled under the load - we lost one reliever sans-hair to a particularly spectacular incident

  • Southerly: Primary School for Beginners,

David said: "I always think the best thing about school is that fact that it's in the past" ....

I used to think that too, I'd put it behind me long in the past ... until recently I was faced with the possibility of my son going to the high school I was mercilessly bullied at in forms 3-5 ... in my own little 30-years on PTSD moment I found myself waking at night, and just shaking at the mere thought of walking into that school .... fortunately we found somewhere better but it dredged up something I thought was long in my past

  • Southerly: Primary School for Beginners,

I remember my first day at school - I really really really wanted to have lunch at school, Mum wanted me to come home for lunch, she said that if she couldn't provide lunch she'd bring me lunch at school - being completely clueless I sat at the school gate waiting (probably while my mother worried about what had happened to her 5 yr old on his first day walking to/from school)

Some days later I got the strap, no one ever explained why

Key was on the plane I got on this morning - he smiled at everyone as he got on - and then sort of stopped waiting for recognition - someone else carried his suitcase

  • Cracker: Mr Transparent,

sorry - I wasn't trying to criticise what you'd said - more try to explain to those who don't remember the inequities that FPP caused

(and I actually wasn't present in Dunedin for that vote - my last day in NZ before I started my OE was the day Marylin Waring crossed the floor and voted against US nukes - we travelled in Tonga and Samoa for 3 weeks and I voted in the US - last time I got to vote anywhere for 20 odd years - I'm still annoyed I missed seeing Muldoon go down for the count)

  • Cracker: Mr Transparent,

I voted Labour in 1984 - because of FPP my voted counted for squat (I happened to live just over the hill from Dunedin in the Otago electorate - the safest National seat in the country at the time) - in fact because of where I lived there was no chance of my vote ever counting for anything - whether I voted for Labour or National the result would have been the same.

Equally if I'd lived on the other side of the hill in North Dunedin, one of the safest Labour seats at the time my vote wouldn't have made a difference either.

That's one of the main problems I have with FPP - governments that get fewer votes but more seats (like Muldoon's) are the obvious stupid results FPP throws out but what I hate is that people in some marginal electorates get pandered to to get votes - just watch the upcoming US election - no one's going to go to California (except to raise money)

  • Hard News: John Key(nesian),

maybe I'm showing my age - but does no one here remember what it was like pre-ACC?

Simple example - in the middle of the 70's oil shock no one would carpool (or even give their friends a ride) to work because they were all dead scared of being sued if they had an accident
