I happened to find the Lijadu Sisters ‘Double Trouble’ album in an op shop last year (alongside Don Cherry & Buddy guy albums no less!) – a ‘needle in the haystack’ moment for sure, but hopefully not my only one :)

    Score!

I found a well-priced copy of the Rough Guide compilatiion (which has some other great tunes) via Discogs. It's costing more to ship from Canada than the LP itself costs, but it's still a good deal.

Oh, bugger! Anthonie Tonnon has been my most-played music this summer (so perfect for long road trips) but I have a prior commitment in March 11.

I've been really looking forward to it – and now I have to have minor surgery (getting a pesky lump cut out of my nose) the day before and won't be able to make it. Bah.

Nice! Although I'm scared that listening to it in the daylight will break the spell ...

  • Up Front: Five, in reply to Sister Mary Gearchange,

If you stand back and re-read that you get an insight into several centuries of internecine warfare and holier-than-thou ad hoc justification for anything you want. It’s irrational, unhealthy bullshit and it deserves to simply be told “no”.

I think you forgot to mention the Nazis there.

There is a time and place to let go. Grieving forever, fostering the anger and helping it fester simply means you’re emotionally dead.

Call me crazy, but when people are still waiting for their insurance to be settled and the rebirth of the central city is on hold because central government can't make work the grand plan it imposed, and when the earth is still shaking, I think we're well within acceptable parameters for grieving.

The Herald allows serial plagiarist Bruce Logan

That’s okay, I fixed it for you.

Some strange bedfellows are being made over this. Not that Bruce Logan would approve of that sort of carry-on.

It's funny that the new world in which columnists are not worth paying allows in known plagiarists.

And when I say "funny", I mean "sad".

Proof of your thesis (for me) Russell is that when I heard the sister’s song it immediately reminded me of the McRae number, then scrolled down and found it was the very same!

It was the opening oooooh-ooh that got me going.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: You are among friends,

I have a disco nerd question. This morning, I was preparing a big pot of beef cheeks to cook slowly for the rest of the day and listening to the Rough Guide to African Disco compilation. (Afro-disco seems to be my thing for 2016.)

And my attention was caught by the Lijadu Sisters’ majestic ‘Come on Home’:

And I thought: “This is a slowed-down version of George McCrae’s 70s disco hit ‘Rock Your Baby’.”

Actually, it’s a better tune – but I’m not wrong, am I? But no one else seems to have ever remarked on this. Someone validate me here.

PS: So I priced up the second-hand vinyl of the EP that Lijadu Sisters song is from. Sweet Jesus. $1000?.
