John Drinnan's article mentions that TVNZ6 has gone this week. So sad as it had some great programmes. I disagree with Damian that this is the norm for media so get used to it. I like a bit of security thanks, and would happily pay a broadcasting tax to keep public service ad-free TV.

Yes I think that's right about deciding decile on a selection of the parent population. It is extremely complicated and most schools complain about a high rating as it means less government funding, although they like it for marketing as it is also a desirability rating. Interestingly, the deprivation index also uses a 1-10 decile rating but the other way around. Just one of the many confusing things about NZ public policy.

To be fair, the local MPs, particularly Brendan Burns and Lianne Dalziell, have been going on about lack of information, poor communication and neglect of the area since the September quake. But they are probably considered too 'political'.

Homosexuality was removed from the DSM in 1972 after strong lobbying, so that comment from the time is not that startling.
