Tom - I kind of agree with you - but I can imagine more of a town/country businessman/farmer split in the Nats

The big problem with these polls is that we don't know how they treat undecided voters - if one of them brow-beats them into submission until they choose someone and the other just doesn't count them then these sorts of differences are quite possible - really I'd like to see them state the number of undecided voters as part of the results

I'm reminded by the story a few years back about some Aussie tourists (I think) who used their in-car nav system to go from Nelson to Chch - it chose the most direct route - some time later on a one lane dirt farm road tacked to the side of a mountain they realised it may not have been be exactly the best idea - there's a reason that road goes through Kaikoura

I once saw it at an anti-apartheid film festival in Berkeley CA in the old UC theatre (same place they did the live Rocky Horror midnight show) - I never really knew any kiwis in the US, we were few and far between - but when Muldoon made an appearance in the film there were scattered boos in the dark from around the theatre

oh please - it used to be that 40 was the new 30 -not any more - these days it's 50 that's the new 30.
Mind you I'm biased having just clocked 50 - my partner is 6 months older than me - I'm not allowed to agonise about this stuff - by the time I get around to it it's old hat and we're over it
