Wooden buildings also sequester carbon; concrete is eco-unfriendly because of the large amount of energy used to make it.

  • Hard News: If wishing made it so ..., in reply to Matthew Poole,

It’s a national smart-fare system (ETA: including the comms standards) developed by the old ARTA and the NZ Transport Agency. That figure is high, but it’s inclusive of work to allow the back-end systems to be used in support of smart-card public transport ticketing in other parts of the country.

Christchurch has had one of these systems for years: smart cards, reloadable on bus or online, usable on all buses and joining seamlessly with the Harbour ferry. Has transformed public transport into speedy and efficient.
We also have real-time GPS bus-locators, which tell you how long you’ll be waiting for your bus. Many bus stops have a gizmo that reports this information, and it’s now also checkable by mobile phone.

Don’t know why Auckland always seems to lag way behind in public transport initiatives, given its population and size.

Ideally the separation between media ownership and editorial control would be enshrined in law. If a corporate entity wishes to exercise its freedom of expression is should do so through the appropriate channel - that being paid advertising.

    +1

What with this and the Govt's evidence-free policies, I'm scared.

I thought the same threshold was meant to apply

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's still $80 for everything except IB.

Being disabled enough to qualify for that benefit does not mean you can’t work at all.

Yes, but why not give the same threshold to sickness beneficiaries? Or any beneficiary, for that matter? I would have thought a bigger incentive to part-time work would be a win-win thing.

Whatever happened to increasing the threshold for beneficiaries to take up paid work before abatement from $80 a week to $100

It's $100 for invalid beneficiaries. Not sure I understand the rationale for that...

Many beneficiaries do want to work at least part-time.

I can’t imagine how this can work out. WINZ spends time and money harassing sick people and solo parents, while there are able-bodied and unencumbered folk who can’t find jobs??

How can this not be an embarrassing and total failure?

Next up: beneficiaries surveyed for possible precious-metal content.
    A spokesperson said:
“New Zealand beneficiaries are potentially highly prospective for a wide range of minerals. The Government would like to see New Zealand maximise the benefits of safe and environmentally responsible development of beneficiaries by reputable operators.”
