It was an open admission that Labor's policies worked and are popular, and that therefore National has been forced to co-opt them. Pretty much an open secret, but to hear it put so candidly was startling. After a term in government, they'll try to get a mandate to do the things they really want to do, and again I find that to be an extraordinary admission.
And ain't nothing wrong with that, thinking that the present Government has moved the country in certain wrong directions, and that it's going to take a while to move back from that. It's something I believe, although my reasons are somewhat different to those of Key, English and Smith, of course. You'd need at least one term to introduce the ideas of the People's Republic of Georgistan.
But to call in the cops because you were caught expressing this sentiment? If this isn't a big deal, then why are National treating it as one - apart from the obvious thing of turning this into "Labour's dirty tricks campaign", rather than properly explaining their vision for New Zealand, short and long term.
-
No, the policies haven't been stolen. They're in basement, in the safe, and will be put on display before the election, but only under tight security. There's a risk that the Labour Party, short on inspiration and willing to do anything to win this election, will steal them.
-
Maybe National could clear all this up and explain that we're all confused, and do this by saying: here, explained in detail, is what our policies actually are.

For vegetarians among us, there's a place in Kingsland that sells some pretty tasty fake fish. And if you're feeling adventurous, you could try their "vegetarian fish flavoured beef".

Quelle surprise, the smear is on the person who had the temerity to record the actual frank discussion of someone who wants to be a minister in a few months time. As usual, Nicky Hager is the punching bag of politicians who would rather not explain what they've said when they thought the public was out of earshot.
When these comments are put into the context of "explaining is losing" (a favoured quote of both Key and Brownlee), we've got a pretty clear picture of just the same kind of arrogance towards the ordinary people that Labour has (at times rightly) been consistently accused of by their critics on the right for the last several years.

I cant wait for the 2.0 with online, feeds and collaboration, which is in development.

I wouldn't normally spam, but since we're talking about web 2.0 and online research, it seems fair to mention the Firefox extension Zotero. Anyone who has had to use Endnote as a bibliographic manager (which is seriously like being transported back to 1995) will appreciate the need for something better. I've only used it for two days, but on that basis would recommend it thoroughly.
It's a non-profit venture of the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University. It's so pretty and slick that I spent quite a while wondering what the business model was...
