  • Hard News: Angry and thrilled about Arie,

The Court report special from Christchurch tonight on TV7 featured a clip of Arie and an interview with Jonathan Eaton his lawyer. Slightly patronising, but sitll interesting. The programme gave an idea of why justice is being delayed in Christchurch. (And David Haywood featured at the beginning of the programme and they were slightly patronising about him too - what is it about lawyers?)

  • Hard News: Angry and thrilled about Arie,

Not much progress because the snow on Monday prevented another assessment, so another remand. As Michael reports from the Justice for Arie Smith-Voorkamp Facebook page:

"Hey guys i thought i would let all you awesome supporters know whats going on. Arie and i went up to court today in the Adjournment section to get remanded as the snow on Monday didn't help the situation and Aries assessment with Phil Brinded was postponed till a later date. We have now been remanded till August 22nd for a another fixture date. We have been transferred to another court house. So basically we are back at square one again. Arie will be assessed before the next court date hopefully. Police will get a report and they will go from there. So when we go up next we will be remanded again back to district court 1. Forward one step back three. So thank you all again for your support for Arie".

  • Hard News: Science: it's complicated, in reply to Bart Janssen,

But even these situations can benefit from a bit of ethical reflection on treating others how you would like to be treated and relationship building.

  • Speaker: This is your National Library, in reply to Titus,

Titus, you have expressed exactly why it is tough (almost unsafe) to be a public servant in NZ today. Assumptions like 'superiors', and that trust is only a one way relationship, indicates to me that you might be someone paid to enforce this merger rather than a librarian or archivist with their professional values of public service, the importance of intellectual freedom, good record keeping and preservation of the nation's culture and identity.

However, some points as to why this merger is flawed policy and will be have to be undone in the future (as it was in the early 2000s): free and independent collection of the nation and state's records could be threatened by directives from DIA 'superiors'; donors may be less willing to donate to organisations that are not seen as stand alone and whose collections may be subject to dispersal from 'superiors' with no understanding of library or archival values; budget constraints in a bigger department could see library and archives funding squeezed as being of less value than other business units; less specialised and inappropriate IT systems being imposed on library and archives records which could threaten such things as public access or long term collection; and, all the other risks from having the leaders of the national library and archives NZ being low level managers in a huge department of state which has many conflicting roles. Archives and the National Library could possibly merge in some form with each other as they seem to be working well together, but they need an independent structure and a passionate, knowledgeable, senior minister to advocate for them.

  • Hard News: Science: it's complicated, in reply to andin,

Andin, ethics, including for research involving other humans, is about our moral and cultural traditions. For pakeha in NZ this mainly means the Judeo Christian tradition and the philosophical tradition about what it is to be human going back to the ancient Greeks, like Socrates, Aristotle and Hippocrates. But basically what it comes down to is to behave to other people as you would like to be treated, act ethically and do not harm others. Our current framework can be traced to the Nuremberg Code, the Declaration of Helsinki etc.

As ethical researchers in NZ we should also respect the cultural traditions of our Treaty partners. Te Ara Tika means the ethical way (as in tikanga) and it is of course not about the literal interpretation of the creation stories but the values they express. In practical terms it means addressing health/ethnic disparities in your research, engagement with your participants and an acknowledgement of the expertise they give to you the researcher, and aspects like more respect and care for human tissue than other countries might require.

Probably haven't described this very well, but I think Te Ara Tika provides a very good guide for ethical research for NZ health and scientific research.

  • Hard News: Science: it's complicated,

Glad you mentioned ethics, as that is an essential component of any scientific research. The Koru is good but Te Ara Tika, compiled by team of esteemed Maori scientists and ethicists, under the auspices of the Health Research Council, is more detailed and newer, and provides a great framework for any New Zealand research.

  • Southerly: Things to be Grateful For: A…, in reply to Ross Mason,

Lovely tree hut, beautiful ladder. I like engineers (my father had three engineering degrees but wasn't very good at the practical application), and just got that clip from another source and it seemed appropriate, although it was not about snow.
