BTW - Dope refers to the Ethnic Cleansing link.

What a dope! Malaysia is a secular country with a Muslim majority. It also has Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, Sikhs and Jews. Turkey and Indonesia are other secular countries with Muslim majorities. But it does ask the question why did Ahmed Zaoui come to New Zealand? I'm not sure but perhaps Malaysia and Algeria have an extradition treaty. Also many Muslims remember the Tampa case and I can proudly say that New Zealand covered itself it glory over that. I was in Rajasthan and a stranger who wanted to know where I was from was positively effusive when I said I was from NZ because of the Tampa story was well known there. Interestingly enough it was just a couple of weeks before September 11.

While living in Australia, I used to watch the 7pm news followed by the 7.30 Report on ABC. Now that's public broadcasting.

Hi David,
I've come to this series a little late but I want to say it's been brilliant so far. I won't even begin to guess the energy expended in putting the series together. The thesis that human civilisational development takes a leap forward when a new energy source is an interesting view. I'd buy that. Seems obvious really. It does beg the question as to what the next quantum leap may be and if we find it in time for humankind's looming energy deficit. I'm hoping to see something out of the realms of science fiction in my lifetime. There's a fusion reactor being constructed in France but we won't know for years if the technology will be successful. It will be interesting to hear your conclusions as the series progresses. -
Thanks Stephen and Russell for quote advice.
Respect to many TV journalists - many of whom I know personally - for the quality they bring to their respective programmes. Damien is an evident example. My criticisms are directed at the constraints they have to work under and the editorial decision making and assumptions made as to whom the audience is and what they will want to watch.
The revolution will definitely not be televised.

Does anyone know how to indent this? HOw come everyone else can do this? Anyway, from Craig's post:
"I don't actually bother wringing my hands too much over the idea that (if this makes any sense) the balance of media power is shifting. And that includes people just turning off."
BRING IT ON, I SAY!

Kowhai, spoonfed describes it perfectly. Essentially sitting through a 6pm television news hour is an incredibly inefficient and tedious way to get the day's news. Too much filler - soft stories and advertising. The internet is way more productive and the RNZ website is just ace because you can cherry pick items. But I would welcome more international stories and not just ones that are 'localised' eg the APEC nuclear row beat-up. And does anyone get the same sense that 6pm is just too early anyway?

Indeed. Advertising and condescending news delivery are my pivotal reasons for turning off television news in general. the fault also lies in the decision making of what constitutes news and what priority to give it. The conviction of Anthonie Dixon is quashed - that becomes the lead story for the day - but wait, there's to be a retrial and he will certainly be reconvicted. So what? Target reveals that laboratory tests of Chinese made clothing show formaldehyde levels of up to 900 above recommended international standards. Huge story in the context of the current spate of Chinese product safety failures. But it transpires Target diddled the viewers by measuring total formaldehyde instead of free formaldehyde and that story didn't get equal prominence to the original except on Morning Report.

I noticed that Herald article about the Clark entry on Wikipedia and I wondered how that was news. It would be news if the political figures didn't have Wikipedia entries locked off. But to know that there's an Echo and the Bunnyman fan in the ministry of Justice is definitely a
Sideswipe item. The sad fact is I think I might know that person. He is probably in denial over the fact that their last good album was Heaven Up Here.BTW - I also observe that the Wikipedia entry on the Red Mosque in Pakistan has been cleaned up a lot. In the immediate aftermath of the siege and ensuing bloodbath triggered when Pakistan troops stormed the mosque to quell a rebellion by student Islamists a couple of months ago, it was an absolute mess. It contained ungrammatical and hysterical accounts and it restores a semblance of faith in Wikipedia that it has scrubbed up rather well.

With bells on! Mr Brown was excellent on Nine to Noon and Kathryn Ryan asked thoughtful questions. The interview lasted half an hour - surely the sign of an engaging chat. Also you would never have known that they were in different studios - Kathryn in Wellington and Kin Mun in Auckland. Well done for getting him on.
