  • Field Theory: How's that working out for…, in reply to Sue,

if anyone wants to rent my house in wellington, for the duration so i can live in rarotonga, for a month drop me a line.

Actually, I've just realised I'm going to be away for the opening weekend. 2 bedrooms just off the Gt North Rd ridge? Eden Park easily walkable along lovingly laid new footpaths? Wyndham Wharf a simple Link bus away for fireworks and the whatnot?
    Offers anyone? :)

  • Field Theory: How's that working out for…, in reply to giovanni tiso,

Um, Telecom really thinks we should all stop having sex to help the All Blacks win?

While I don't think anyone here is making that claim, it certainly was an undercurrent in the frenzied reporting yesterday in advance of anyone actually seeing the campaign.
The "lesson" for future marketers (that I keep hearing this will be) won't be about sex-linked advertising or even misreading tone - it will be about losing "launch control" of your ad and having the entire thing argued in a vacuum. Regardless of how lame you think the actual ad was, it would never have generated a tenth of the national wailing if it had just been launched under it's own steam...

  • Field Theory: How's that working out for…, in reply to Russell Brown,

All Sky and TV3 games are in HD and TVNZ and Maori TV will have a mix of HD and SD broadcasts.

Merci monsieur. Won't be ponying up for Sky Sport then...
I didn't realise TVNZ were in on that too, so for the big games they'll likely be (at least) five separate channels showing the same game at the same time? Ha.

Given the TV-types what hang around here - does anybody know of the HD broadcast plans for the everyone-but-Sky's? Are MaoriTV and/or 3 are putting the bigger games out on HD? I'm doubting that MaoriTV has the broadcast bandwidth but I'm hoping TV3 are...

Did someone say Doctor Who is about to start up the second half of the season again?!

(Way way more important than yet-another-ad)

  • Hard News: The new riot reporter, in reply to Russell Brown,

I'm looking forward to iOS 5 letting me mirror anything on my iPad screen.

    iPad2 only though, yeah...

It just strikes me as so insanely obvious that organised disturbance/protesting/rioting/violence/whatever always manages to use whatever communcication channels are available that shutting down the newest spangliest one would just be massively pointless. Especially given that it seems this particular communication channel:
    a) wasn't the major organising channel for these riots (BBM, text, I suspect fairly underground web forums)...
    b) does a lot more good than harm during the same period (although Riot Wombles would have been heaps better if it was actually rioting Wombles)
    c) is actually relatively easy to track compared to others (this basically being the primary reason business are so behind social media)

  • Hard News: Is that it?, in reply to Joe Wylie,

. . . private contractors who will receive cash bonuses if they are able to place their wards in work or training.

Again, nice "private contract" businesspeople are treated as good rational economic actors who perfectly respond to pricing signals and economic incentive, but the people they're being contracted are treated as the exact opposite.

  • Hard News: When the Weather is the News, in reply to Russell Brown,

It's 5.3º at the moment and I can't see it getting any warmer from here.

Is that the warmest it's got today?! I've been lucky enough to be in one of dem fancy new 5-Green-Star buildings all day and with the sunshine streaming in you kinda forget it's bloody freezing outside...

double glazing (that's the rules now) and insulation top and bottom. It does work

And what REALLY works is north-facing glass and a concrete floor (thermal mass). Our windows are old single-glazed factory windows and I can see light through some of the gaps in the doors on the southern side, but I got through yesterday with a cold wearing a t-shirt with just a standard 8-bar heater in a big (50sqm) room. And that heater was off for good chunks of the day.
But yes, that was positively-balmy 8deg Auckland.
