  • Southerly: Tower Insurance Have Some Bad…, in reply to webweaver,

When I sarcastically asked if they would pay out for the full cost of replacement once the house had been bulldozed, she went away to ask an expert and came back with the same answer. No.

So it really does sound like this is part of the "deal" that has been struck between Govt, Insurers and Reinsurers. "We pay for write-offs, but only for repairs on forced relocations".
    Not cool at all.

Hang about. Didn't John Key and Gerry Brownlee delay for a long time because they were negotiating carefully with insurers and reinsurers?

How could they possibly have missed this little gem? How can Tower say "what the government mandates with regard to land is nothing to do with them", when John and Gerry negotiated so carefully?

And I'm also confused by what the experts are saying here - is half a billion dollars a reasonable price? I get that large scale software implementations are harder than they seem but, really, half a billion?

No, it's not a reasonable price.

  • Busytown: What was lost,

Buried in Obama's strange Tom Clancy speech last night was an inkling (albeit less eloquent) of what Jolisa has said.

And tonight, let us think back to the sense of unity that prevailed on 9/11. I know that it has, at times, frayed. Yet today’s achievement is a testament to the greatness of our country and the determination of the American people.

Perhaps if he'd left off the last sentence?

  • Hard News: The file-sharing bill,

What makes me particularly grumpy about this whole affair is that we already have laws that cover copyright infringement. There is nothing stopping rights holders from going through the courts to get names and addresses from ISPs, then suing those infringers.

Why is it our responsibility to ease the burden on these gigantic multinational companies to get their existing remedies?

I'd like to see the documents that show they've already tried this a number of times, and proven it to be unsuccessful, thus resulting in our need for a new law to cover a specific type of infringement on a specific platform.

No, but here's your money quote: "in time for next year’s Rugby World Cup"

    Sigh.

  • Hard News: Holiday Open Thread 1: Beach…,

Spent a week in Opononi. I haven't been to the Hokianga Harbour in living memory. It's gorgeous. Really interesting, historical corner of Northland, with stunning natural scenery to boot. All topped off with some awesome fun sliding down sand dunes into very refreshing water.

Tane Mahuta is just around the corner. The old chap is looking very stately, but the die-off disease is quite apparent. We went on a 30 minute walk to see the second largest kauri (short and rotund compared to Tane Mahuta, but amazing in its own way), and at every turn you could see one or two kauri with no leaves or bark, dead as a ship mast. Scary. At the start and end of the walk you're required to scrub your shoes and spray them with some fungicide.

I too nominate twatcock, but also put to you: Real New Zealander, which I find people using regularly for any signs of ironic non-New Zealandness (being brown, not being able to finish a beer, being a fucking cyclist, etc.)

The Harold edited my comment on that article! I've fixed it below:

What [**the shit**] is up with motoring writers proposing ingenious rules for cyclist when motorists are responsible for 9/10 cycling accidents?
