Something else not to miss. Bill Mahers final show for the year the New Rules patriot edition, one of the best ever:

Also a short one on Obama World for the 27% of Americans reportedly "afraid" of their new president:

You can download the whole show via itunes or watch a whole show throught the nifty new playlist function on youtube through "tullycast3 "s channel.

  • Hard News: At home with the art-hackers,

Thanks Purple Spheres is a very cool concept. I like the whole lo-tech attitude to hi-tech although I had to go to Wikipedia to find out what a multi touch interface was...

  • Hard News: A bit tacky, no?,

Look forward to seeing the Headless Chickens. I saw them with Nico in CHCh back in the day and managed to see Children's Hour a couple of years ago for the first time ever. Seeing Child Hour I was reminded what a wonderfully malevolent stage presence Chris Mathews has, he comes across as somebody you definitely wouldn't want to babysit your kids. Please no Fiona McDonald, not necessary.

  • Field Theory: Handle the Scandal,

I like Pete Montgomery he talks a lot of rubbish but who cares I like his enthusiasm, he isn't afraid to make a dork of himself which I find appealing. He reminds me of Murray Walker the old F1 commentator, it didn't really matter what he was on about it was the comforting excitable drone of his familiar voice that was as much part of the atmosphere as the sound of the revving engines.

Peter Williams' ties are another matter though, clearly he is dressing himself. Perhaps he is at the brink of some hilarious Mike Hosking-style wardrobe meltdown.

  • Field Theory: Handle the Scandal,

Eventually was able to watch the video on the Huffington Post website, (ironically they appear to have nicked it from TVNZ as it has the ONE logo in the corner). Couldn'y watch the video on the TVNZ site because it doesn't play. Why in this day and age to media players not progressively download like youtube does (same problem with the hopeless Comedy Central website). I'm on Woosh and it's a moderately fast connection but the TVNZ site wont play streamed or archived footage, as usual geeks with high spec computers can't conceive of people not having ultra fast connections and high spec computers. TYoutube has been a smash becaus - like Amazon - they ALWAYS deliver, might take a while but it gets there.

Also the CGI footprints are a huge disappointment. The opening ceremony is the best part of any games I always think and the footprints were truly thrilling - oh hang on they weren't real. Big difference.

  • Hard News: So far from trivial,

About 2 years ago Veitch, in discussing Venus and Serena Williams with someone on air one morning, commented something like "it makes you realise where apes come from". There was a small outcry at the time but nothing like with Holmes and his "cheeky darkie" comment. As I remember it it was a big news week and the story got swamped by something much bigger. I was appalled at how easily he had got off so I sought out his broadcast apology on the Radio Sport audio archive. His brisk "apology" was made at 6 or 7am at the start of his show and was along the lines of: "In bantering remarks talking with (? Dean Lonergan I think it was) I made some remarks that may have caused offense..." etc. It was lame gutless and he didn't sound remotely remorseful, I have greatly disliked him ever since.

  • Hard News: Not Okay,

The "embarrassing uncle" comment is brilliant. Moore is an odd figure, his columns never hit the mark. They are pompous and full of self importance, and in these most recent examples, bitterness. It still clearly irks him that alot of people still don't take him seriously. I remember a silly pretentious "Battle of Civilisations" type column he wrote for the Herald about Islam and the West post Sept 11. It seemed to me he was trying to ape that other grandiloquent fool Thomas Friedman.

I'm just gutted that I missed the great and under appreciated Bill Direen, must be more alert to these things.
