I've sat in on a reasonable number of very long Select Committee meetings on this Bill (non-vested interest stylez) and I really only wanted to add that Russell, you did a great job of summing up the issues.
It was easy to laugh away the (many) crazies, and view Foodstuffs with wariness when they complained about regulatory costs ruining their pharmaceutical expansion plans, but tougher to deal with the small business owners who all seemed to have at least anecdotal evidence of their products working, and are facing bankruptcy if this Bill becomes law.
However, the hypocrisy of the anti-regulation lobby was pretty astonishing, as you aptly outlined. While there are some definite and serious downsides to a transtasman regulatory body, all the time spent on spurious aspects of the Bill are hampering our efforts to pass law for the good of the country.

Didn't really have an appropriate place to put this, but:
Russell recently linked to a discussion on the practice of 'bus plunges' being used by newspaper editors to fill up small empty spaces when heading to print.
Well, all is not lost in this shallow digital age! Today's Herald has the headline 'Search for car crash victim after hill plunge' with a very short accompanying story.

Did anyone see the TV One late news teaser tonight? Completely ridiculous, leading with something like: 'Beastiality, rape, orgies and lies - the Police are embroiled in another horrifying scandal!'
Please, guys, give us a break. You're better than that. TV3 was similarly unimpressive in their 6pm slot, although for a lead story the piece was relatively brief.
What I don't understand - surely those working for the two major news orgs are a reasonably educated, rational lot... similar to those on these forums. If their knowledge of Wishart is anything like ours, how could they conscionably take the information he provides and turn it into a major issue? Is it a) a fear of missing out if the story miraculously turns out to be true, b) a fear their competitor will take the kudos for breaking the story, no matter how crazy or c) in the case of TVNZ, a fear of being labelled as biased for not exploring stories that could damage Labour?
Or a combination of the above?

Craig, your thoughts on the PA are noted and I agree O'Connor speaks before he thinks at times. However, what matters to me with regards to him in this case is that he says police support him and he is a superior Commissioner to at least the previous two. I believe that reflects the feeling within the employee group - otherwise he won't be their representative.

For a number of reasons, I think that kiddy porn is a more serious offence than bestiality, which isn't to say bestiality is a trifling matter.
I think the type of Government in office is totally irrelevant.
