  • Up Front: Home is Where the - Ooo, shiny!, in reply to Danielle,

I'm exactly like you in this respect, Danielle. If i don't have a deadline it doesn't get done; if I do it gets done really close to the deadline.
I read a book a couple of years ago by Tom Hodgkinson called "How to be idle" and I've not looked back. The wierd thing is though, despite myself, I seem to somehow get stuff done and keep things ticking over.

  • Hard News: Friday Visions, in reply to Geoff Lealand,

(but keep your house a ACDC-free zone!)

    Just for that Geoff

I still don't own an ACDC record but there ain't a better rock guitar sound so gratuitously pushed up in the mix as this one.

Sorry, back to Everything but the girl now.

One for the cat lovers. The whole series of them are funny too.

  • Hard News: My Year in Culture,

My albums of the year would be Lisbon by The Walkmen and Edge of the world by Andrew Mckenzie (you can get this one for free at Arch Hill)
Best gigs: Pixies in Auckland, the Veils in Napier and Flaming Lips in Sydney
Low light: the passing of Ian Morris who I had got to know quite well since moving here
    @Tony

Playing bass for HB Band Devils' Elbow for a while

That was fun. You got to do some home gigs without having to cram into a van and play Timaru and Palmy Nth. Good call.

  • Hard News: Unreasonable people vote,

Yes, I too have held Mo Tucker up as one of the drumming greats. Maybe she still is but I doubt I'll be able to think of her as the cool drummer any longer. Shame.

  • Radiation: Geek, annoyed,

It does seem a bit wrong to point out the absurdity of Claire's super fast labour and not mention the crazy scenario of fixing a crashed jet airliner with gaffer tape and taking off on a beach. Through those last few episodes I kept wishing they'd stop wasting their time with the plane because it just wouldn't work.

  • Hard News: Ready for the Weekend,

I too enjoyed the Media 7 show last night. I have it on series link via MySky but it misses the start every week. Slightly frustrating but I'm sure I'll live.

Sad news about Alex Chilton. I'm still getting over Mark Linkous's (Sparklehorse) death from a couple of weekends back. No more please.

  • Hard News: You're all fabulous,

Thanks Russell for another year of great writing. I wouldn't consider myself a lurker (sounds a bit creepy) but I am an avid PA reader.

As for best music of 2009. While there has been a number of great albums and live shows this year, it's a couple of unexpected highlights that stand out for me.

    Album
    Grant Hart - Hot Wax.
The sort of album that may normally have passed me by, my expectations weren't high. An aging punk rocker who's been quiet for a long time, you might think he would have lost it by now. Well this is better than anything Bob Mould has released IMO. He's touring NZ in Feb too.

    Live
Steve Abel and the Chrysalids - The Cabana (Napier)
Only about 25 punters showed up for this show but most of them purchased a copy of Flax Happy on the way out. A spell binding performance.

    Enjoy the break

  • Hard News: I'd just like to thank ...,

Still, I wish Ladyhawke aka Pip Brown all the very best (her singles are good revisionist fun), even if I wonder whether, rightly or wrongly, her international career may go the same way as the Datsuns- i.e. a brief, bright spark only to come crashing down when the press moves onto the next fad. She came accross as a top sort at the awards, though. Good for her.

You couldn't hold that against her. 90% of all artists in her position suffer this, especially in England. She's already achieved more than most (if I remember rightly, NME listed 3 or4 of her songs in their top 50 songs of 2008?).
They are good pop songs regardless of the 80's sound. Change the production and the songs would still work.
