  • Hard News: Who Guards the Guardian?,

Jay Rosen was pretty scathing of the Newsnight Interview

    http://pressthink.org/2013/10/the-bbcs-16-questions-to-glenn-greenwald/

He even got Ian Katz, the Editor of Newsnight, responding. Still wasn't impressed.

  • Southerly: Continuing After A Short Interruption,

Bunging someone 2 hour postpartum into a car is a seriously bad idea.

Not only is it uncomfortable, it could well be seriously dangerous. A friend had a massive bleed a couple of hours after her second birth. It was life threatening even though she was in hospital at the time.

Good to hear all went well (not counting the earthquake thing).

  • Speaker: Naked Inside the Off-Ramp, in reply to Russell Brown,

The Lange story after we withdrew from the nuclear club is instructive. He had a ton of shit poured on him.

    Me1: Something something bullying.
    Me2: Realpolitik! Something something naive!

For me the instructive part of the nuclear free and Rainbow Warrior episodes was the realisation that the US had no inherent interest or allegiance to us, merely what service we could provide as a vassal state. We are forgetting that lesson. Australia has never learnt it.

We got punished for defiance. I say fuck `em!

  • Speaker: Naked Inside the Off-Ramp, in reply to Richard Love,

And the main problem with the 2003 version was that we subsequently found that the GCSB was secretly ignoring its legislation.

Which seems to be the culture of these sorts of organisations, namely "A Few Good Men"-eqsue. You can't handle the truth etc.

This 1983(!) article about the NSA could have been written yesterday, and shows the organisation was always tacitly given it's head to engage in activities that were solidly illegal.

  • Southerly: My Life As a Palm Tree,

I feel your pain. Literally. The adorable Aardman movie “Chicken Run” morphed into “Chicken Pie Machine” game. Haven’t done it much in the last few years, but when pushed into it the other day I almost killed myself – my son is now almost 12 and he is BLOODY HEAVY. I may well not be as strong as I once was …

Thunderbirds: my god they need a decent edit. Endless shots of bow-waves/vehicle wheels/plane wings (whatever is about to crack/blow out/fall off).

My youngest (girl) just wasn’t as into the rough stuff as my older two (boy & girl). When I tried twirling her round and throwing her in the air the poor thing was terrified, and through the sobs made me promise not to do that again. They all grow up with different experiences, and she gets to have a way cool older brother to watch do crazy things.

  • Hard News: U: It's about the combos, in reply to Damian Christie,

No, just simply that I’ll see something on TV I wouldn’t mind watching, from the start, but since I didn’t record it already, and will probably forget to watch again in 50 minutes on +1, I’ll just record the +1.

Oh right. I'm possibly over-thinking this a little.

  • Hard News: The Real Threat, in reply to Rob Stowell,

As is ’there is no evidence Jon Stephenson was spied on”. Which is quite compatible with: he was spied on, we know it, but we’ve destroyed all the evidence…

Very Yes Minister-esque, e.g. "There is no evidence Jon Stephenson was spied on .. we've made quite sure of that".

Gets to be every damn sentence needs to be parsed multiple ways for meaning. At the risk of seeming cliched, it really is Orwellian.

Here in Aus the leader of the opposition has the fantastic phrase "I had no specific knowledge"! WTF does that mean? Whatever he feels like when knew facts emerge about the degree of his "knowledge". Post truth politics. GAH!
