  • Hard News: Don Paul,

Although if you're currently having your hands cut off in a zimbabwe village or have to bury 47 people in one week in the same village, you wouldn't just put that wish down to road rage i suppose.

  • Hard News: Don Paul,

I'm currently living next door to the UN Food crisis summit (which started as a climate change conference I believe but that's not as en vogue right now) in Rome. I did have that same thought, Rogerd. Mugabe was one of the 'heads of state' speeding past in motorcade while the rest of Rome is stuck in traffic as a lot of roads are blocked off for security reasons. I was trying to get my daughter to school across a pedestrian crossing dotted with carabinieri and constant helicopters overhead, a gaggle of frustrated italians on motorinos zooming around me.
A little less security for some of these people would be a blessing I thought to myself. But maybe that was just early morning Roman pedestrian road rage.

  • OnPoint: Media beat-off,

    http://www.susanblackmore.co.uk/Books/Meme%20Machine/mmsynop.html

In 1999 Susan Blackmore published the Meme Machine, (so yes around 25 years after Dawkins coining of..) with foreword by mr. Dawkins. Actually it's a rather useful concept, I always thought. Susan Blackmore's interpretation of Memes is probably more helpful in understanding for example religion then Dawkins' own the God Delusion.

  • Hard News: Speaking freely,

Ben, Eric the RED is a WAIHEKE LEGEND. come on.. you've never seen him? In summer barefeet? a turban around his head? He's always there. He even has his own article on waihekepedia: http://www.waihekepedia.com/index.php?title=Eric_The_Red
    short, i admit.

    gulf news: for the classifieds
marketplace: most likely to feature a picture of yourself or a friend
waiheke week: i agree with richard c! You just can't help yourself, how often i've flung it away with the words THIS IS THE LAST TIME I'VE READ THIS CRAP. most likely to feature pictures of somebodys 60th birthday party on the society page.

but the real reason why all of those three get read is OF COURSE the ferry.. Instead of driving on the western motorway listening to tha radio, commuting waihitians actually have ample opportunity to read a paper, so 3 weeklies is not really enough. I"d say a dedicated daily is not unimaginable on Waiheke.

  • Busytown: I Sold My Soul to Santa,

oh dear i've ruined the magic of santa for my 5 year old already. I actually do believe in the magic of childhood but the last few weeks i just felt i couldn't keep up the elaborate and confusing pretense we seemed to be concocting for our kids. It was weighing heavily on little F.'s shoulders and when he finally exclaimed OH so you buy all the presents, i could see his eyes light up in relief.. for him it had become all too illogical.
Saint Nicolas already had come knocking on the 5th of December, because I'm Dutch, then we went to see the Smith and Caughey Santa on Queen Street, and the Argentine side of the family insists on the Three Kings bringing presents too on the 6th of Jan. Then there's the tooth fairy and the Argentine tooth mouse Raton Perez, who fight for the right to claim teeth... I've resorted to explaining the need for narrative to give sense to our lives.
I never gave too much thought to my official parenting stance on it, but it has just come down to not being a very good liar ..

  • Hard News: Get a Clue,

RB maybe you should complain with the broadcasting standards authority. you'd hope that that would help somewhat towards it not happening again...

Isn't it almost like quoting callers from talk back radio in a news report and attributing the quotes to the host or the radiostation.

  • Hard News: Bad Skillz,

Last year we tried to get Maxx to show us how to get to Auckland Airport by public transport from downtown. It suggested you walk from Onehunga (with the precise distance in metres!)..
    that was the ONLY option.

they seem to have remedied that now.. phew!
