nice thread. Thing I don't understand, (this series aside) just generally, seeing as our one day side has a bit of function and our test team is all out to lunch, why not have the one day series before the test series for a change, get the boys warmed up and get a bit of confidence in dem bones?

McFly? Anybody home McFly?
-
replace involve with require
replace afoot with abreast -
doesn't democracy just involve too much damn reading to stay afoot?

Just to be unhelpful, but doesn't compare mean to examine (two or more objects, ideas, people, etc.) in order to note similarities and differences
and doesn't contrast mean: to compare in order to show unlikeness or differences; note the opposite natures, purposes, etc
isn't a contrast just half a comparison? and isn't half a comparison not a comparison at all? Isn't Russell just asking us to read?
or
could it be sequential? compare (the differences and similarities) and then contrast the comparisons to find further differences between the comparisons and the contrasts?

but wag class? what would I want to do that for?

I skipped chapel almost every morning in my final year for a sleep in. I figured if everyone (including my parents) was facing the alter, and fearing God, no one was going miss a worthless sinner except the school chaplain. Having paid close attention to his sermons the previous four years, I felt fairly confident, regardless of whether he noticed my absence or not, that he was of the live and let live bent, and any loose ends could be sewn up in confession. besides I knew all the songs already.
and God willing, I was right.

so an emphasis on differences. It's a toughy Russell, hopefully will have time later in the day.

compare and contrast?

And for Mark T; maybe I've got you wrong but I get the distinct impression you believe all authority figures have to be given respect. Well if that's what floats your boat then I wish you all the best.
yeah Felix, you've got it wrong. Not at all. I'm more of the thinking that all authority figures have to be challenged, generally on their own terms, but that it does no good teaching your kids not to show respect to authority figures if they can ruin your day.
There was a misunderstanding a couple of pages back, where a couple of folks misread respect, interpreting it to mean that adulation type of respect as opposed to the courtesy kind of respect. As you do..
