  • Cracker: Blues Clues,

I've been working all day in the same building as Radio NZ and watching out a for phalanx of Red Squad or whoever they send on such tape raids. All quiet. But walking back through the lobby of the James Cook Hotel I noticed the Police Association was having a meeting today and there were a lot of plainclothes detective sort of guys wandering about, obviously plotting.

  • Hard News: The perils of political confidence,

There also seems to be a bit of frustration around the country about National Party candidates not turning up to, or pulling out of election meetings. For example, there was a really good, packed, well-organised, cross-party meeting on social policy issues in Wellington last week organised by various NGOs, but no Act or National MPs attended. The National candidate in Wellington Central, who did turn up a a couple of hours later for Backbenches, was scheduled to attend but apparently pulled out. It was a pity and seemed disrespectful to those who had organised it and those who came along, as the discussions were wide-ranging and there was even some common ground established between those who did attend. It didn't even have to be a local person, as the Maori Party representative who came is based in Hamilton.

  • Hard News: The perils of political confidence, in reply to Russell Brown,

I know she is her own woman with her own work, but If she didn't want her conservative views known she wouldn't write about them in the Listener each week.

What I was commenting on was the cyclic nature of all this. We can't predict how an action in one time and place will come back in another form.

  • Hard News: The perils of political confidence,

Nice bit of synchronicity re Joanne Black, with her more recent links to the National Party, and now it is the National Party PM as recording 'victim'. They should get Geoffrey Palmer to give his personal/legal opinion on teapotgate.

  • Hard News: The perils of political confidence,

This has been a very active thread and I haven't had time to catch up with all of it but has anyone referred to Joanne Black's story of inadvertently taping Geoffrey Palmer in similar circumstances (after a news conference), playing the subsequent tape to her colleagues, and the resulting mocking from MPs and media eventually leading to his downfall as leader of the Labour Party? Maybe Key has heard this story and that is why he is so worried.

  • Legal Beagle: Referendum Fact Check #6:…,

Graeme, there was another misleading discussion about MMP on JM's Panel today. (And one new panel member complaining that no parties are looking at the long term - she obviously hasn't noticed that's about all Labour is doing). Anyhow Tim Watkin and Jim Mora said repeatedly that the Epsom 'cup of tea deal' would reflect badly on MMP. If they had been accurate they would have said that all electoral systems are open to manipulation if parties are determined to do that, for example doing deals on who gets selected as candidates, who stands against them, how you set electoral boundaries etc.

Just as Jim or his producers (or who knows who) manipulates who gets to be a panellist on his show.

  • Hard News: On Science,

Anybody here applied for the first round of HRC funding and heard this week that they've got into the second round? My research centre had 13 applications and 2 have got through to the second round. The whole university only got 3 into the second round. Even those initial applications take weeks of work.

How about age, ethnicity, socio-economic decile and voting record while you are at it?

OK two men who may be not quite 40 and one conservative Maori man. Not much a nod towards equity.
