I have to agree with Kyle, why can't they play down here - I missed them in Oz last month too - I'm still pissed about the stupid stadium - we decided last night that a better use of the $200M would be to buy lots of cheap tickets to Auckland and fly each rate payer to a concert every year
-
Robyn is talking about Paul Brislen - I have nothing to do with either Telecom or Vodaphone other than that they both mail me a bill every month that could be smaller

ah - you need what I have - an Ooma box or a Vonage account - when we moved back to NZ from the US we moved out California number with us - our US calls are 'free' in the sense that they're all US local calls - and our friends can still call us on the same number they always have
(our Vonage account is $25/month - an Ooma box costs ~$200 with free US calling for the life of the box, I'm thinking on moving - note: I'm consulting for Ooma at the moment so I have a bias)

Steve said: "why are the big guys charging so much more for data? Mobile data in NZ is amongst the most expensive in the world by a long way."
In general everything here is so much more expensive - almost every small village in India has a guy with a couple of pay phones who will let you call an Auckland number (VOIP of course) for about 1/4 of what it costs me to call Auckland from Dunedin using Telecom - now that guy in India isn't taking a loss .....
One of the real problems we do have is that we charge people who call mobile numbers rather than charge the owner of the mobile the extra cost of the incoming connection - that's the way it works in the US and it means that they don't have 'mobile' area codes and 'geographical' ones - they just have area codes which means you can happily move your home phone number to you mobile and incoming calls are counted in their 'free' minutes. The result is a lot more competition.
If we can't do that then maybe we should be consistent and set up a VOIP area code and charge everyone LESS for calling it ....

I assumed that "XT" is tried and true branding and the next generation product will be called "AT" ....

They are 'double locked' in the sense that if I buy one in the US I can't put a NZ sim card in it, nor can I load up any program that hasn't been blessed by Apple and provided through iTunes.
If I get it SIM unlocked I can put a Vodphone SIM in it, but I still can't put just any app (say a VOIP app to use my VOIP exchange at home) because Apple won't let just anyone sell anything through iTunes.
My Android/gPhone on the other hand will happily load anything I want to (or want to write myself) and I don't have to get Apple or Google or anyone else's permission to do so

Which is why I love my gPhone (and cupcake arrived today! now my bluetooth headphones work)

You want growth Mr English? you need R&D, you need start up companies, 100s of new ones each year, that means you need VC investment money sloshing around - our problem in NZ is that compared to everywhere else real estate is too good an investment - almost everywhere else in the world has capital gains taxes - and as a result can offer tax breaks to long term investors.
For example in NZ "capital gains tax" as an issue means more taxes while in the US "capital gains tax" means smaller taxes (at least smaller than income tax rates)

After watching that I just figured he'd been stuck in traffic for an hour and wanted revenge

oh yeah sure "in time for the rugby world cup" has done us really well here in Dunedin, we're $200M in the hole now and counting, counting interest it's going to be more like $400M - $1M a game subsidy for every game played for the next 20 years - it's just an excuse for the good old boys to make more jobs for other good old boys
If you actually want something done I'd suggest a different slogan ....
