Two sculptures from the Auckland Botanical gardens at Manurewa. Regan Gentry's spade sculpture. The other one is by the entrance and is of seagulls - not sure who is the artist.

January 9.30 pm warm (so lovely you can almost overlook the spots of oil still appearing on the beach)

I was there last night - just couldn't believe the extent of the crowd. Auckland really is a different country.

Far from balmy here in Wellington tonight. The garden furniture has already taken off and I fear for my newly-planted swan plants which are bent double. Plants have been known to blow out of the ground in Wellington winds. Some weird golden clouds are scuddering across the sky. I hope the little Brets survive the gales.

One little frog on a lilypad. Less than two centimetres long.

No photo yet but will get one. Now found two and they are tiny - about 2 cms long and one still has remnants of a tail. One is brownish sitting on a brown lily pad and one is green sitting on a green lily pad.

This is exciting: I just noticed a nicely camouflaged tiny frog sitting in the sun in my goldfish pond (photos of the fish and waterlilies in above pond have featured earlier). No one gave the five tadpoles I added to the pond several weeks ago much chance of survival with over 30 hungry fish, but one at least managed to metamorphise. Such is the stuff of life.

  • Hard News: #BDOMemories,

But then in recent years it’s gotten old, dribbly and toothless and while it’s not nice, it’s for it’s own good that it’s put down.

old, dribbly, toothless = not nice
own good (ie the convenience of others) = death

If attitudes such as this are common (although admittedly not in this context for humans) it is not such a jump for some with less honorable intentions to the 'worthless eaters' of another era.
