  • Hard News: The Casino,

Assuming copyright on Conan was renewed, it'll be protected until 95 years after it was published (not 70 years after the death of author). That'd keep it protected till 2027. And the 95 years will probably be extended before Conan comes out of copyright, if previous history is anything to go by...

See, for example, Copyright Term and the Public Domain in the United States

  • Hard News: Mediocrity Watch,

New Zealand has a fair few native bees, I have an idea they're loners or have simple societies (like bumblebees) and so don't produce collectable honey which may be why they're not much taken notice of, but they're plenty good at polinating.

  • Hard News: Pomp and Circumstance,

One thing for good lefties (which I understand to be the bulk of the scribes here) to consider - the majority of NZers that bothered to vote, voted for National.

Some respected commentators say National got over half the vote. Others say they got 45.45% of the vote. Who's right? Who knows? Probably we shouldn't implement the election results until we're sure.

  • Hard News: Dial O for Obama,

More like one hellish endorsement. Getting support from this upperclass NY/SF magazine when $700,000,000,000.00 has been gifted to inept bankers in NY and SF is not a good thing. It places Obama in the same elitist flavoured realm as John Kerry at a time when the urban financial crowd look particularly vile to middle America.

Who are these inept SF bankers? OMG - are they gay?

  • Hard News: The Debate and Onwards,

Slate has a remixed transcript of the Presidential debate that's worth reading. Using independent sources to verify the facts cited by each candidate, they've republished the entire debate noting where the claims are not supported - you simply hover over the redactions to see what was originally claimed. Lots of interesting reading for fans of either candidate.

Top of that Slate page includes:

we slashed any statement drawing on actual data or recalling past events while sparing hypotheticals, platform statements, and personal anecdotes. More important, we were agnostic as to whether the redacted facts were accurate.

Slate redacting something doesn't mean they thought that it wasn't supported, just that it potentially could be (and probably has been)checked for accuracy.

  • Hard News: The Debate and Onwards,

As far as why does it matter that Obama constantly said he agrees with McCain. The presidency is not a place to learn on the job. Now that it has been convincingly demonstrated that McCain knows more about what is required to lead the US it is obvious that McCain should be president.

    Que?

Does a president have to reflexively disagree with everyone in the world in order to lead the US? Or is it just the other candidate and Spain?

  • Hard News: The Policeman at the Dinner Table,

Why, my reaction to this latest killing was "ENOUGH!!!"

My conclusion is that it'll take capitalisation and at least three exclamation points to reduce the murder rate. Probably more.

Peter, you must try harder, it's almost as if you don't care.

  • Hard News: Weekend Warriors,

Well, I guess we're all supposed to be media junkies who would automatically recognise Pulitzer-winning New York Times columnist Maurren Dowd and Ann Coulter in there.

Nah, the female conservative republican is Palin, surely. Though the rest of your post holds, I reckon.

  • Hard News: Medical Matters,

OK, so go with B Jones' question

Grant, I think you've missed proving the argument that if something is alive and human, it deserves the full legal protection of personhood.

Something being human doesn't necessarily mean it can be described as having humanity. Easy to say skin cells are human, hard to say they have the property of humanity or personood.

  • Hard News: Medical Matters,

Grant, a while ago you quoted Linger as saying

The conceptus is only potentially a human (note the article, it makes a huge difference) in any other meaningful sense.

    and responded

Potentially human? What does that mean? What is a baby before he is human?

Not many people deny that a blastocyst is alive, in the sense that any cell is alive. Not many people deny that a human blastocyst is human, in the sense that any human cell is human. Those statements are reasonably obvious, and reasonably true, I think.

It is quite a different thing to argue that a blastocyst is a human.

But you completely ignore it the difference. Your question should have been "Potentially human? What does that mean? What is a baby before he is a human?"

    And the answer?

Well, a reasonable answer is "before a baby is a human, it's an embryo, a blastocyst, a conceptus."

Your facts aren't universal facts, they aren't universally obvious truths.
