  • Hard News: Hate and guns,

Hmmm. The Howell thing gets murkier:

Santa Monica Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks said on Twitter that Howell told an officer during his arrest on weapons charges that he wanted "to harm Gay Pride event."

But she provided no specifics and at a press conference three hours later, Lt. Saul Rodriguez suggested the tweet may have been born from a miscommunication.

In a tweet Sunday evening, Seabrooks said, "Tweet should have read: Howell was going to event. He's now being held in weapons & explosives charges."

And he's gay or bi according to associates, so could plausibly have been just waiting on a friend to go to the Pride parade with. So ... maybe he was just driving around with recently-purchased assault rifles and explosives? Weird.

  • Hard News: Hate and guns, in reply to Alfie,

It’s worth pointing out that Mateen was investigated twice (2013, 2014) by the FBI for his radical views, and twice they decided there was nothing to worry about. Maybe he should have been on a list which restricted him from buying serious armaments? If such a list even exists in the US.

The Senate Republicans last year voted down a measure that would have prevented people on terrorism watch lists from buying guns. Unbelievably.

EDIT: Oh yes. It appears that Howell was on probation for firearms charges – he was fond of pointing guns at people – at the time he obtained three assault riles. It further appears that he is gay or bisexual. Lord knows what's going on there.

More on the arsenal Howell had with him. Three assault rifles, high-capacity clips (bound together for fast reload, according to people who know about these things), five gallons of explosive material. Fuck.

Right in the middle of Sir Joh’s iron rule of Queensland, no less. He probably would have seen them as “dangerous hooligans”.

Sir Job's Brisbane is inseparable from any cultural understanding of the Saints. This documentary is fascinating:

n Love With These Times is a perfect Flying Nun artefact – the publishers managed to misspell Straitjacket Fits on the back cover blurb (Muppets!) so there is an inserted erratum (and apology) sheet in each book – I chuckled loudly at that.

The apology makes a handy bookmark though.

I was in that caravan too, and the cricket game,

The whole thing was more than a little crazed, but I have very fond memories.

Just discovered that Sunday marks 40 years to the day since the Saints recorded '(I'm) Stranded'. Well alright!

Self-deprecating one page; full-on record-shop-geek opinionated the next.

Yeah, exactly. And the music-geek stuff is more striking as a consequence.

Lead vocals by Bailey Wiley (the song is from her S.O.M.M. EP, backing vocals from Ria Hall, Anna Coddington and Mara TK. Impressive.

.I think I may have watched Princess Anne’s wedding under the influence of LSD…….Captain Mark Philips still freaks me out a bit….

I once stood next to Prince Edward, in public on a streetcorner, while I was on LSD.

Pretty sure I wasn't hallucinating either. He seemed to be nervously waiting for a car to pick him up.
