  • Island Life: Helen who?,

Ohn those baby ads... and all the rest. I'm going to do my bit for Labour this time by not donating any money to them. At least until after I see what their advertising looks like. On record, the less they spend on advertising, the more likely people are going to respond favourably.

Somehow you make the daily routine sound idyllic, in a tough-ass hard-boiled way. Wait til Bob gets a taste for mutton-bird. There'll be no going back.

more a tribute to an obsessive personality than any degree of giftedness.

You're too modest on Bob's behalf. In fact a great deal of genius IS what we call "an obsessive personality"- when it takes a direction we don't value. I guess it's unsurprising the boy is a linguist, given his parentage. "R" comes somewhat later, but lets hope he rolls 'em like rocks down a bluff!

  • Hard News: Acid Man,

    I had this track
stuck on mental repeat all weekend.
According to wikipedia, it was written as a "warning against the danger of using LSD".
Its origins may be deeply uncool- Kenny Rogers! a wild Glen Campbell solo!- but wiki also repeats the claim it was Hendrix' favourite track.
    1967 was another era, eh?

    Thanks for explaining Sharon. ]
    And commiserations.
I won't air my full feelings- I also work for UC. But feelings of relief for some particular people affected are tempered by anger and regret. Kia kaha.

  • Hard News: A business most feral,

I/S- the "more honest" approach of appointing regional managers does appear to be underway!
    Who's next!

  • Hard News: Leaving the bunker,

    Hoho, those aussies!
My wife had a job in the Australian civil service in the 80's, in the Ministry of Defence, addressing mail-outs to defence contractors.
She soon realised she was writing the same addresses out over and over again. She got someone to type up multiple sticky labels for all the main contractors, and could do her day's work in about half an hour, most days. The addresses were more legible and generally less error-prone, too.
    No-one noticed.
After three months she was so bored, she quit, and her supervisor realised she wouldn't have to be replaced. He was apparently quite miffed- possibly because he'd lose status for having one less lackey.

  • Speaker: A few fun Facebook facts,

That seems reasonable for Trade Me. I've probably made them a fair bit more than $35, and I'm not heavy user... Trade Me has a clear revenue stream and doesn't need to be devious to acheive it.
I don't see how bebo/myspace/facebook/xing et al can ever have as robust a model. They don't offer me anything, and I suspect they don't have much to give advertisers.
An open source option, though, and maybe one which offers a sort of portable/transferable/exportable "e-portfolio" - that would be interesting...

  • OnPoint: AIA and Maori Seats,

Blistering barnacles, Key does seem rather, ahm, "under-done". And generally under-whelming.
He's had a very easy ride with the media until lately. The country badly needs to see how he copes with pressure- sniping, frontal assaults, feet held to the fire, etc- before handing Mr Blandus Anthropithicus the top job.

  • OnPoint: AIA and Maori Seats,

I thought the Maori seats were more a gesture of gratitude to the kaupapa forces, than an appeasemnt or sop to Maori greivances. And particularly to Kepa and his troops- who played a considerable part in the campaigns against Titokowaru and Te Kooti.
The Land Wars were seldom simply a "maori v pakeha" affair: intertribal alliances and greivances had a major role, and there were, at times, more maori fighting for the (pakeha) government than against it.
