  • Hard News: After the Charter,

If I had a dollar for everyone who told me after the recording that Coleman reminded them of Key, I'd have ... five dollars.

But would you give it to charity?

Jeez Tom, did we lose the Rugby World Cup again or something?

Maybe he's been watching the cricket?

  • Hard News: Siren song,

Is it too much for 4 people? I'm not sure.

On the contrary, six computers for four people is not *nearly* enough. We have four for two, plus the CPU/video card/DVD drive/motherboard/extra hard drives waiting to be swapped out in one of the computers (I know, I know, we should just get a case and power supply and make it a fifth). The other half is voting for the iPod touch to be counted as well. At our flat, we had fifteen computers among six people. And I would bet reasonable sums of money that someone else on the forums could top that count.

  • Hard News: Siren song,

I refuse to run Vista, even in a virtual box. When I have to use Windows, it's XP sp2 which is as solid as Windows gets.

I have to say that Vista has been improved *greatly* from the original version. I mean, it's almost usable.

(Actually, I'm running Vista on this computer, but only because it came installed and it's not quite useless enough to warrant wiping it and installing XP.)

Same at Victoria, but my understanding was that it was the university who had bought the requisite subscriptions (although possibly at a discounted price) rather than a promotional move on the part of the paper.

They usually put out the Press free for a month or so every year here, and I know that's a promotional move, because it's loaded with "student subscription" advertising - a stupid, stupid idea if ever I saw one, because yes, it's cheaper, but only because they only give you the paper in term-time. Really, why bother?

Hey look, with superb timing, aversion therapy for the both of us tonight at 8:30pm!

In the hopefully unlikely event that I am ever hunted down by police dogs, one of two things will happen: the police will find me huddled on the ground in a catatonic state about thirty seconds later, or I'll go nuts and try to bludgeon the dogs to death. I know which is the best survival strategy, but the odds are probably fifty/fifty as to which would happen.

The owner was a friend of my dad's as it turned out and a lovely man, but 10-year-old me never quite trusted the dog regardless.

I was bitten (fairly non-seriously) by an Alsatian at age eight while patting it and talking to its owner - the mother of a friend of my sister's. I've been terrified of them ever since.

  • Busytown: No news is good news,

I was a huge newspaper reader as a child/teenager - one of my great pleasures in life was getting up half an hour before the rest of the household, doing my chores, having a hot chocolate, and reading the paper before anyone else got to it. Then when I took it down to my parents with their morning cuppa, I got to announce the major headlines and chat to them about what it meant. I was gutted when the Evening Post went; I could tell that the Dominion was reporting stuff that had happened no later than the evening of the day before, and the Evening Post used to catch me up on that day's news.

That totally stopped when I left for uni, though, and nowadays I barely touch an actual paper. The cost has something to do with it, I'll admit - why pay for what I can get for free online? I still enjoy the feel of spreading one out, but the older I get the more cynical I get about the quality of the articles; half of it is stuff I read three days or three weeks ago in my feed-reader, the rest is bloody Rosemary McLeod and co. I miss the ritual, but I don't miss the actual content. I think I'll still be sad if they go entirely, though.

  • OnPoint: Wrong. Wronger. Wrongerest.,

They for example have a common assault charge, and a 'man assaults woman' charge.

This particular fact really irks me. Do we actually need to have "it's wrong to hit girls" enshrined in our law? Can't we just agree that hitting *anyone* is wrong?

Can public execution and being burned in the hand be far behind?

Thankfully I've always enjoyed the Middle Ages, so returning to them should be just fine and dandy.
